It's Hard To Believe!
f Each week many stories come across our desk that shock, dis--atisy. please, and certainly enlighten us as t • action' in different part' of this country of our' With a crime rate almost to the alarming stage and headlines made o r many stories •>f ciime' forcing one to question our laws, two such -tones attracted special attenti'ii this pas' w< ek We would ike to pas- them on to you in his fmshion. THE SAME OLI) STOIH it was lass than a year ago Hat a Philadelphia man. free on bail a'ter being charged with the death of a police ...ficer, o'led a second policeman. In Washington, D. C.. the ■ umber of crimes committed by paroleeand accused men set tree on bail and awaiting trial, has reached the danger point. The same problem laces every tn ijoi city in the United States, , d is overflowing into suburban areas. Many citizens were shocked a *-w years ago when a plot was tr covered to place bombs in three of our historic shrines the L berty Bell, the Washington Monument and the Statue of Liberty. )ne of the same men who planned that sabotage is again under arrest. He had been found guilty in the bombing »lot and .sentenced to a term of five years. He had served less than two years when someone decided that he had either paid । s debt to society, or had been punished enough. Then, last month, Manhattan Borough r resident Percy Sutton named the recently released convict to serve as an unpaid advisor to a ■ommunity planning board. After all. he had shown some flare for planning. ’o most people, this would have meant a chance. not only ♦o clear their names, but to mow that the parole system ■an work. But this man did ot react as one might guess. It was the same old story once ,gam. He has now been ini cted for taking part in an•ther b mib plot. This time the ■lot did not involve destruction >i historic symb >is. This time v involved hunwn beings. 1 wenty-one members of the extremist Black Panthers, inuding the parolee, were alegedly plotting to bomb five

SIRHAN IN SPLENDOR The Los Angeles County supervisor has been quoted as estimating the exist of the trial o r Sirhan B. Sirhan as being more than $858,000 to date. He said that the sum total will be in excess of a million dollars before the trial is finished. In recent months, we have been up to vur elbows in circuses. The James Earl Ray trial and the Gan ison-Sh iw episode set some sort of record for bizarre court cases. They make the Scopes trial look like a small claims case. It now appears that the astronomical expen.se of the Sirhan trial is not going to be the end. The California Medical Facility is in process of creating special living quarters for Sirhan in case he is found guilty and sentenced to life imprLa>nment. Plans for the special cell appear to be curiously lavish. The quarters will consist of three units. One will be a kitchendining room. The others are a living room, a bedroom and a lavatory with shower. This seems to us generous and makes us wonder how the California tax-payer must feel about it. Unfortunately. the press release did not give the cost figures oh the cell. It did not even detail what the furnishings would be. We are not among those who believe that convicted murderers should live a bread-and-water existence. Prisons o # today do not contain dungeons with chains and manacles or torture racks, but surely a line should be drawn between imprisonment, as a punishment for a capital offense, and a retirement suite. After all. the as' is-in is convicted, he should receive appropriate punishment. A man is dead. A woman has lost her husband. Children have been deprived o f their father. Punishment in an environment of the sort described might well lead other murderers to seek equal treatment, or to conclude that murder is its own reward.

Voice Os The People To the person involved with removing the flowers from my grandparents grave. Lt is beyond my way urf reasoning what those two bouquets could mean in your heart. Can they brighten your home? Can they be placed on another person’s grave with love ? My grandmother cfmse her burial plot at the Westlawn Cemetery in North Liberty the summer before her pasMng. She chose a simple spot close to the road; not knowing It would bring temptation and a cause for others to sin. This was certainly not her way. And yet, sometime between Easter afternoon and Wednesday you found the audacity to remove those red roses from their resting place. Yes. I knuw they were only artifical; but they were given with love the same as if they had grown in God’s own garden. I have reason to believe this was not simply a prank, because none of the older flowers were disturbed from the surrounding graves. This is not the first time this has happened to our family. Why should it happen to anyone? In my own mind you are the lowest of people, you are a thief. A person who does not have the nerve to even beg or borrow from the living but must steal from the dead. To you I have no more words; but to my Grandma and Grandpa Clingenpeel I say: You have went first and I remain, To walk the road, though not alone. I ll live in memory's garden With happy day's we have known. In Spring I'll watch for roses red, When fades the lilac blue. In early fall when brown leaves call, I'll catch a glimpse of you. We have known so much of happiness.
We have had our cup of joy. And memory is one gift of Gnd That death (or thief) cannot destroy.
