Harley Mangus a3p Former Resident Cited For Heroism In Vietnam War A former resident of Rt. 2, Walkerton at Fish Lake has been awarded the Bronze Star medal with "V" device for heroism in ground combat in South Vietnam. Sgt. Dale Hostetler, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bixley, Granton. Wisconsin, is the binther of Wade Hostetler, Rt. 3, Walkerton and is the grandson of the late Allen Hostetler of North Idbcrty. According to the citation. Hostetler’s platoon came under heavy enemy automatic weap >ns fire from concealed p ositions on Aug. 5 of last year while <>n a combat mission in the A Shau Valley. The citation said. "H<cbtl with complete disregard fir his own safety, nianeuveied t > tia caemy flank and M'ninerl a heavy volume of effective automatic weapons ire. “Hostetler then crawled ! within throwing di lance cf the enemy position and threw a hand grenade which -ilenced its occupants. Hostetler's acti ns enabled the members of his pla toon to withdraw the wound* I men to a safe position.” Hostetler entered the Army in November, 1967, and received hi basic training at Ft. Bliss, T*‘xas. After completing udvan’**! training at FT. Polk. La., he was sent to Viet Nam in April, 1968 with the 101st Airborne IMv. The 23-year-old s Jdier was recently in Hong Kong for recuperation. was wounded on three separate occa.sions in Vietnam fighting and expects to be in the United States so«i. He escaped injury in the Aug. 5 fight, but suffered a serious leg wound shortly afterwards.
