THEN CAME THE REST OF the trouble. Early in the game, a foul on Steve Downing was credited to McGinnis. Despite tremendous efforts by the W ashmgt n cosk h. Bill Green, this was not changed and it wa.i very obvious to many in the fieldhouse The । ticiating followed an inconsistent pattein the entire game as play under the basket was hard and rough, often bem • called and often not bein r < il'ed. The complete inconsistency hurt both teams at one time or another. MARION WAS IN THE pr<>ce-s of playing a near perfect ball game, the < nly thing i te- .n Could do to be lt this Cvmbmat. n of talent on W i-hington s s<|Ui!, mainly in the persons of McGinnis and Downing. These tw giants were devastating un ler the ba-kets and were passing out punishment and receiving it also. Their awesome defensive abilities put extra pressure cn shooting and challenging them for a rebound was more riskv thin flagpole painting. The Giants seemed to be pulling the upset of the year in the final quarter as they pulled to leads of up to 12 points. HOWEVER. AS MANY other teams have done all yr ar long that prove d costly, the Giants decided to get a little cozy with the bill and getting coz) with a team of wildcats is nit the best idea. The Continental started controlling play like it was a practice session ar. i all a sudden a 56-46 lead for Marion was a 57-56 deficit. The Giant thr n m )ved ahead by three again as time (whatever it was I wa becoming a very strong far tor. THEN CAME A COUPLE OF jewels. One. the calling of Ned Ren hrr f- • having his foot on the foul lane on a free throw b\ Joe Sutter, was unbelievable when you consider it was tie Jr t 'hot of a two »hot foul. The mi -ed m<' n i shat hurt again, but more than ever, a one-and-<ne attempt shortly after that was missed was fatal. Downing got the basket to push the Continentals ahead 61-60 after a play in which manv felt he committed a foul on a rebound, which had the scorers been right, would have been number five. A SHOT BY TOWNSEND that possibly w uldn't have been taken unde condition' of knowing the time, found big McGinnis (lea ing the b. ai d and tw p 1 se- ahead hi! a wide-open Wayne Pack racin; for the basket when Dan Gunn dump* J him from behm 1 for a foul that evident!) o< cured just as time ran out. No
one in the fieldhouse was aware of this as no one knew the time had expired. However, a jumping. jubilant bench if Washington's streamed onto the court in a victor) celebration and it was later determim 1 that the game was over. Add to the p oblems that time had entered the situation on sevt.al occasions at the end of periods, i nee taking a basket from Sutter and on two other occMwiH causing wild shots to be taken unnecessarily, and you ca; 1 Jind enough margin of error to change the .mal decision. THEN CAME THE SECOND game. This one was like a Sunday School picnic after the wild and wooly first contest. It didn't take the Tolleston team too lung to determine who was going to win a very cold Vincennes team ran into shooting problems shortly after the . Irst p< md ended and never bounced back Tolle.ston killed the larger Alices on the b< aic. . but the jun ping jack Raiders were just too p werful. THIS SET THE STAGE FOR the final. Between ses lons an eb et i dan supposedy bad the scorebcard clocks working, but it took just two seconds to realize that this too had g ne for naught as once again Uie teams were placing without visual aid of a clock. However. Washington had the aid of McGinnis and Ixiwmng again and away they went. Moving to an 18-14 irst period lea 1. things kept improving or the Continentals in the secund pc. . and bv eaily in the third danza the lead was 19 points. Washington then got a little careless and the free shooting Raiders began dropping sonic of their .ohots to slowly trim the lead until the final score of 79-76 resulted. DESPITE THE FACT THE final margin was only three points, it was most obvmus that as McGinnis and Downm? stay* 1 in the game. Washington wasn’t going to 100.-o after opening up a g I margin. When all was said an done, big George was a record breaker in .several wavs and had completed a season that found the big ac< collecting over 1 iMX) p mis in one year’ This is a i d for Indiana b'-ket! ill in one <e:rm and the <nlv th.Tg th t will hurt his c< Uege chan ’es a e his grades, which W' n t ink him hiirh in any class. The play was fine, the action good, but the third p tv. the o' ’iciatin". kft a little to be desired. In the future in Indiana. s me r fort is g< ing to have to be placed on officiating Why not a third c 'icial for these games . . . certainly it couldn't have hurt in this meet Not savirt that officiating cost anyone a game, but it sure did effect play as this was the poorest received officiating by basketba!! fans these eyes have ever witnes.ied in a state .'m ils. man's game, but having two and only two older officials try and keep up is something else. There has been proven years ago and more recently in the Big Ten. to cut fouls and improve the quality of play, but in the Indiana tournies, it is <till two and not always two of the most capable. Sometime a me.it system instead of a friendship system will have to result. It might be a shock to some, but belonging to an association and attending meetings doesn't make an official any better than not following these steps. spect of the funs. Saturday things got a little hairy several times and in the final game it took a strong-willed boy to get near the baskets with the punishment being handed out that was in these areas. But in all sincerity, the clock stoppage affected play as much as any officials, putting everything on a little more sub-par basis. However. the play was great and certainly nothing can be taken away from the 1969 champion. Indianapolis Washington.
