M itt< - sen. was ju-t like some jxn.p'e who make New Year’s Resolutions - they decide that they are going to do thus and so but that is exactly as far as it goes. Rev Matterson went on to six the past year, depending up in x ur perspective, had been either a greet or tragic one. He menti ned the new morality code, college students riots, crime in the streets, accidents, great t> agedies and ideological proI nets and said that these are the things which make the news. He further s'ated th 4 the great majority of men who go about their business remaining faithful to home an 1- iety - these make ro news - yet they are there. We are all aware, he said, of these stories th it made news but in spite vs all God is working mightily. He is working on campuses, on the streets, in the homes, in Czechoslovakia, yes cv« x where - God is active in human history. \s we approach the New Year Rev Matteson asked that three points be considered. 1» The New REMOVE WARTS! And possibly ' before too long man will find himself in a "push-butt n' so- ' ciety. Se, ndly we think on old failures and are confronted with a relativism. We pionn-e twelve n inti, .co but our resolutions di 1 n t become realities. We ha ’ a m.’J riy <f religion produced 1 a slight innocuiatun of Christi nity. It is the opinion <' the spea kti that the only kind of Christian^ who can meet the opportunities and challenges of the future a e those who are totally committed to Christ. As the contemporary American pagan beet mes more sophisticated, he bec< mes more difficult to reach and it f Zlows without buying he becomes more needy than ever. Fin illy, an unchanging God gives assurance to the true Christian. It is this Christian who can face the New Year with confidence for he knows that there is a Soverign G<d who is the L rd of History. He knows that Grid has a plan for every persan who will have His plan and he has the promise of God’s eternal presence. Rev. Matteson closed his message with u quotation from His d tjesty the King in an Empire broadcast. "I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year. ’Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness and put your han I Into the hand of God; That shall be tn you better than light and safer than a known way.’ ” The oiuo rooms were warm and cheerful despite near zero temperatures.
