John H. Gif tin. Jr., a retired Colonel in the U. S. Marine Corps, was born July 18. 1921. in Cambridge, Ohm Am a child, he moved with hiw parents to New Concord, Ohio. up pilot for Astronauts Shepard and Grissom. Glenn attended primary and secomtary sHvsils m New Concord, where he also graduated from Muskingum College He entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in March 1° and whs graduated from this prog-am and commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1943. After advanced training, he joined Marine Fighter Squadron 155 and spent a year flying- F4C fighters in the Marshall Islands. During his World Wur II service, he flew 59 combat missions. After the way he was a member of Fighter Squadron 218 on North China patrol in Peiping, and had duty in Guam. From June 1948 to Dei ember 1950, Glenn was an instructor in advance flight training at Corpus Christi, Tevis. He then attended Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico, Virginia. In Korea, he flew 63 mission^ with Marine Fighter Squad on 311, and 27 while an exchange pilot with the Air Force in FBf Sabrejets. In the last nine dayof fighting in Korea, Glenn downed three MiG's in comb it al ng the Yalu River. After Korea. Ghun athndei Test Pilot School it the Naval Air Test Center. Patuxent River Maryland. Alter graduation, he was project officer on a numlter of ai c. aft. He was assigned t« the Bureau of Naval Weapon* 1 in Washington from November 1956 to April 1959, during which time he also attended the University of Maryland. Glenn has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on six occasions, and holds the Air Medal with 18 Clusters from his service during World War 11 and Korea Glenn also holds the Navy Unit Commendation for service in Korea, the AsiaticPacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medul, the World War 11 Victory Medal, the China Service Medal, the Nathxial Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citutmn. the Navy's Astronaut Wings, the Marine Coips Astronaut Medal, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. In July 1957. while project officer of the FBU, he set a transcontinental speed record from Los Angeles to New Yolk, spanning the count x in 3 hours and 23 minutes. This was the first transcontinental flight to average supersonic speed Glenn received his B. S. degree in Enginering from Muskingum College. New Concord, Ohio. Muskingum College also awarded Glenn an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Engineering In 1963. he received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Nih<m University in Tokyo. Japan. Glenn has more than 5 455 hours of flying time, including 1,900 hours in jet aircraft Glenn was elected to the Board of Directors of Rnvnl Crown Colo Company on Oh^ber 19, 1964.
