THE 1968 FOOTBALL SEASON is now underwuy and the encouraging tu nout at the local high s< hool game between North Liberty and John Glenn Saturday night was to say the least en routaging. Much has been said about high school football over the seat.- as the smallei schools hav • adapted this spoil as a major atli action. it was an nounc**d this war that over 100 high schools in Indiana ase now participating in football which is now th*- largest pcrc*nalge ever. THE CALIBER OF HIGH s« hool football has increased imjnvnsly ovei the years. It wa.sn t too long ago that very few .uh nils really played a sound fundam iital game and jvally gave the fans good football to see. How‘Ver. with the great influ nee of th • sport in the smaller schools, better coaching, better fie'.-t^ bet lei -quipment and better boys are making this sport < >ntinue to grow and grow and grow. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT football has a place in high school athletics in almost every school. You usd to read about a high school in Indiana now and then that put a basketball team on the floor even though then’ were only 15 or 18 boys in th*' school. That day is gone forever, and the larger schools put larger athletic programs before the students. However, football is the most expensive sport o the schools and must hav** good folFrL, Sat. A Sun. This is a known 'act as wars ago a 200 pounder was almost an unheard of Hung. Today, a boy doesn’t make the team just be« ause he is big. but he must have th • abi ity to move and keep up with the game as well. THE TREMENDOUS EXI’AN SION of football in high schoi 1 m<»ves right <>n up through col leg". Today their teams are stock'd with boys from more schools and consequently, bettei talent to supply these colleges. Tlie colleg * sea ?»n also is du? to g< t into full swing with some o th* mall colleges already start ing. many moi? this week end and by the folowing week end oil tlA* major teams wi.l b" st ait ng action. THIS WEEK END WILL AL so see the National Football lyeague fast gaining stature and momenti um. has already begun with league contest? b ing play<-l this past we“k end. From h r< on <>ut through the middle of January, football will be king of sport with brief time outs hen and thro for the World Series, the start of basketball and hockey. How ever, the tremen dous appeal o r football in reemt years has made this the number one attraction. SPEAKING BRIEFLY OF the baseball situation. it seems that St. Louis and Detroit haw things going pretty well for themselves. Th" Cardinals had a brief spell where they k»st ball games- to the Giants, but cam" back with a big win Sunday to reduce their magic number to a very low’ figure end make it all but impossible for th"m to be overhauled. Meanwhile. Detroit is havng just a little more of a struggle, but seem to be riding safe enough save a big losing streak while Baltimore remains hot. If this is the cos*. as most expect, it will set up some interesting situations in the world series. Many will be anticipating some great pitching duals between Bob Gibson and Denny McLain. This could easily come about mayb* even three times should the series go the limit of gomes. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT this year theJK* are two of the iIMS rii. outstandmg performances in many years. McLain could b' come the first game winner in 34 .wars, a task thwt most baseball men felt was almost imp .ssibl" in this day and age. Gibsun on the other hand, although not worked quite vis hard as McLiin. is really turning in some kind of a job with his earned run average. Shutouts ai" almost commonplace with him as 21 of his first 20 wins were whitewash jobs. YOU HAVE HEARD TIME and tme again that this is the year of thv pitch"r. S-veral have been outstanding, but still when all the dust settles, htie isn’t going to b a large bunch of 20 game winners un'ess s veral pitchers finish real strong in the kist two and a half wcks. It is a hard goal to 11. t anymore with the .elief pitchc being a very us"l tiling in th s day o r baseba'l. M my times two or even more pitchers will be used in a shutout and 20 yei.s agio this was unheard of. A pitcher was nwr jt -. ked unless he had an ailment o. someth ng of that nature while holdin; a team scoreless. EVERYONE WILL BE LOOKing forward to the World Si r."S as this gi**at fall spectacle makes fans out of p< opk* who couldn’t name mure than a vw players in either leagU". But at World Series time, they are not only baseball fans, but ba^bail experts. That is just another reason that professional sports are he great attraction they ai" in this country. Plan Nosh Liberty Open Coif Tourney W" an* going to try something new this year in the North Liberty Tournament. We are going to divide the m<*n inh> Flight.; and giv* trophies to each Flight winner. There will be 4 Flights, (Championship. A- Flight, B Flight and C - Flight). In th" future. when we get our hsa| golf course rompeted, we will require everyone to shoot a qualifying round or else use his established handicap to determine which Flight he should be in. But, for this y**ar, we are asking each man to get his approximate vouchvd for by at least two men and we will place him into a Flight according to that awrag". We realise that thenp is a difference betwven golf courses. so each man should tell us tin what course he can shoot this averagv. Our tournament will be held at Eberhart Course in Mishawaka. Sunday.
