THE FOURTH OF JULY AND the All-Star break indicates the major league seasons are roughly ivalf through. At this time, a lot of evaluation can be made of the progress of the teams and it still looks like Detroit and St. Louis could make a run-a-way of the respective leagues. However, many good leads have fizzled out In the last half of the season, but never-the-less, these two clubs are presently in a spot to say to the rest of the leagues, you catch us! DETROIT'S SUCCESS STORY to date has been a combination of a couple of things. First, their pitching has been steadied much with Denny McLain getting off to a tremendous start. Second, the relief crew that manager Mayo Smith decided to go to this year has given a much more sound bullpen The young pitchers serving as the relief corps, has done a good job to date and should be getting their share of ARTHRITIS-RHEUMATISM When it seems that nothing will give yoa relief from minor arthritic or rheunotic pains, get 100 STANBACK TABLETS or 50 STANBACK POWDERS an 1 use as directed. Experience the fast, comforting, temporary relief Stanback can give you. If you fail to get relief, return the unused parr and your purchase pr :e will be refunded. Stanback has been granted the Good Housekeeping Seal. Sector yourself how helpful Stanback can be. Stanback Company, Salisbury, N. G

pressure under fire before the stretch run of the season. Some timely hitting and the help of the bench in this department has also made a considerable difference. Even with Al Kaline setting out his broken arm, Mickey Stanley and Jim Northrup have both had their moments where they picked up some of the weight of this star's injury. ST. LOUIS ISN'T SURPRISing anyone really except maybe for the way they are winning their games. With a basic solid lineup from one end to the other the Redbirds have a very good and basically young pitching staff that has clicked real well for them this year. Roger Maris and Orlando Cepeda haven’t been stinging the ball the way many expected, but once again with the pitching that Bob Gibson and the other hurlers have been giving them, the Cards don't need a lot of runs to win, BEHIND THESE TWO teams it seems to be a real dog-eat-dog race. If one of these clubs can put together a winning streak, they could malce a run at the leaders and make pennant races out of the respective leagues again. San Francisco seems to have a good chance, but when Marichal isn't pitching, they are almost another good hitting and so-so pitching ball club. Willy McCovey has gotten off to a great start but all in all. the Giants haven't had that consistency on the mound they need. LOOKING OVER THE ONES

chosen to represent their respective leagues in the All Star game, brought a few raised eyebrows. The major league players are very good at basing this one the performance to date of the players and not the name in most cases. A couple of players made it that aren't having their best years such as Harmon Killebrew and Hank Aaron, but they were chosen for their respective positions. The naming of Don Kessinger to xhort was a little surprise, but the Cub lead-off man has done as well as any shortstop this year. Ron Santo, even though not playing up to potential this year, also received a starting n<»d at third and deservedly so. IN THE AMERICAN League Red Carew got his second consecutive starting assignment at second base, a slight surprise perhaps but no second baseman is tearing up that league. Jim Fergosi won the shortstop job over Louis Aparico. Little Louie is the best the White Sox have to ohu tlua 3 ear anu the one man that is keeping them on the ball field. THE GAME. TO BE PLAYED next Tuesday in Houston's Astrodome. will of course be aired by NBC-TV and watched by millions. This will be the first time in the domed .stadium for many American Leaguers and the first time they have played on the synthetic surface. There has been a lot of talk about the ball moving much faster when hit on the ground and the hops are a little different. This could bo a slight disadvantage to the American Leaguers in this game. At any rate, it will be another great spectacle for the fans and should be quite a game again this year. AFTER THIS BREAK IN action, the teams will get back in the swing of the pennant races and the battle to make the world series and right to reign as World's Champions. This will be the last year for the present setup as the American League has already voted to play division baseball next year and the same recommendation has been made for the National loop. The way the American League has it setup. the two division winners will plaj a best of five series to determine the team that will play in the World Series. With 12 teams in each league, it seemed to be the best solution. Boating Safety Boating accidents are becoming more prevalent in Indiana, as more comparative amateurs acquire boats and take to the lakes and streams.
