M.D., Indianapolis internist and president of the Indiana Heart Association offers this caution Remember, you may be on vacation, but your heart doesn't get one. That splendid organ was designed to work without a layoff. But thee temptation is to make abnormal demands on it at just the time it has to work harder to keep cool in heat and high humidity. Your heart will sustain you in added activity only if you have trained it to do so gradually. Don't be a week end athlete, or a two-week-on-end activist. Especially if you are near or in middle-age and have led a fireside existence. Sedentary individuals, especially prone to lethal heart attacks, Dr. Coggeshall notes. You may be eager to squeeze the maximum of your free time and money, but don't plunge into activities, particularly on that first trip to the beach. The water may be colder than you think, and sudden, extreme changes of temperature can affect even the healthy heart. Moderation is the key in every thing. Follow a nulritous diet, but don’t overeat. Instead of rich, fatty foods, eat fish, chicken, turkey, lean meats, vegetables, fruit skimmed milk, cheeses made with skimmed milk, and margarine and shortening made with polyunsaturated vegetable oils. These are light, digestable, and basis for a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fats, which promotes better health the ' year round. Keep mentally cool, too. Avoid stress and strain that can be magnified in hot weather. If you are involved in home repair projects — stretch them out. Driving? Take frequent rest sops. Don't gea overtired. Wear stops. Don’t get over tired. Wear air circulation; garments of a ligh color allow heat rays to bounce off. Drink plenty of fluids, but go easy on iced liquids. Often they have the effect of making you feel hotter. Os course, if you are a heart patient, you should seek your doctor’s advice before planning a vacation.
