Il BASEBALL HAS NOW moved over one-third into the reason and to date, it has bem basically a pitcners year. This isn t uni nmmon early in any season as irregular schedules. had weather and the first time ai aind the league often results in this. However, this year, it is lengthening out well into tin season and is suiprising many of he experts. SEVERAL FACTORS probablv bad to this. IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME since one can remember the tremendous number of shutouts this early in a season. Throwing tin goose eggs is a common thing and the terrific start by the pitchers has the composite batting averages of the teams well below a normal count. Records been set and the one recently compiled by Don Drysdale of the Dodgers, was that many people felt was safe forever. However, big Don hurled five (■•n cutive shutouts and enough innings beside that to cmnpje ; line 5S consecutive scum Ie < I'aims before giving up a . .nje run of any 11 pe. MANY TIMES THE DISCUSi.n has come up concernin just what peicentag. pitching is in base! ill. Abst baseball men will s ty 75 per cent, but this, year it seems to have jumped at this stage <>f the game. It.is usually expected that with the hot. weather- comes the improved hitting. There have bet n fewer than usual real hitting sprees, but on several occassit ns the batters have made a pretense of bn aking the two month drought. It is strange that this discussion should b'- so dominant in early season ball when the hitters are paid to hit and the pitchers are paid to keep them from hitting, but that is the way it is and to date the pitchers have the hand. AT THIS POINT OF THE two penntmt races, two clubs have been holding safe leads recently. St. Louis, the defending worlds champions, were expected to do this- in the National League as they have a solid ball club almost anywhere you can kxik on the team. They did have one spell that wasn't much for hitting and lost seven of eight at one time, but bounced right back to really move ahead with a winning right after their losing ways. THEY DON'T HOLD AS BIG a lead as Detroit does in the American, but seem to have things going their way pretty much behind again a solid pitching staff and good hitting. San Francisco made a real threat once and most feel that the Giants and Cincinnati have the best chances to catch the Cards if anyone is going to do it. However. the way everyone else has been beating each other, it has left the Cards in the top slot.' WM Fri. A Sat., Juno 21 A 22 Wait Until Dark with academy award winning actress Audrey Hepburn
DETROIT HAS OPENED A safe margin in the American League and this race seems to already have eliminated seven of the ten teams. Most of the clubs have fallen well off the pace and the Tigers are leading Baltimore and Boston by a very safe margin at this time. Detroit has done this with the expected hiting they have, but add to this four good starters and a bull pen that this year can get someone out. This was their downfall last season an 1 this year the young view in Detroit's bull pen has done a real job to date. THE SEASON IS A LONG way from over for both of these clubs, the early leads they have are encouraging tn th nr fans. They at 1 ast set th v pace in th> ii icspective luc’iim and it is n<»w catch us if you want to win.
