Walkerton Town Board News The Board of Trustees of the Town of Walkerton convened in regular session, Monday Evening, May 7th, with full attendance of the board responding to call. Meeting being held a day early due to the Board Room being used as a polling site for the Primary Election. Newton Williams, representing the Decorating Committee for the Walkerton June 6 - 9th Festival presented sketches of proposed placement of various colored bunting on town’s street lighting poles throughout the business area and also advised that 100', cooperation of merchants was anticipated in placement of bunting on their store fronts. Placement of bunting and hangers for same approved on the poles and Mr. Williams assured that town’s utility department with their aerial ladder truck would hang the bunting for the committee. 5 represenatives of the 1400 block of Ohio Street, West York, came before the Board and cited some undesirable conditions that existed in their block and also advised would apply to the addition in general. Report was heard that some units of the area have burning barrells within 10 to 15 feet of housing units and some are burning garbage also. Complaint was registered that a property owner had established the semblance of a "junk yard’’ and this condition should be corrected. It was also cited speed limit signs through the circular drives should be replaced as well as on the Ohio Street thoroughfare. Previously 10 mile per hour signs were on the drives and 15 mile per hour on Ohio Street through the West York Addition. Reportedly cars are ixang parked in the circular drives and due to the narrowness of these is causing obstruction of traffic and would create a very definite hazard to fire trucks, ambulances, or other emergency equipment. It was also reported that following rains and unsatifactory drainage condition exists. Representatives were assured by the Board that a thorough investigation would be made and corrections insighted where practical. Police Activity Report for April was presented as follows: 3 traffic accidents investigated; 7 parking tickets; 10 traffic arrests; 6 traffic complaints; 10 special details; 12 funeral details; 9 fire details; 7 assist motorists; 12 messages delivered: 6 attempts to locate; 16 motorchecks; 8 assist other depts.; 23 miscellaneous complaints; 14 business irregularities; 3 lost articles with 1 return; 3 dog complaints; 10 dogs disposed; 3 disorderly conduct complaints; 4 family complaints; 3 vandalism; 3 larcenies; 3 burglaries; I summons served; 1 crimial arrest; 1 stolen bicycle and recovered. 2 juvenile complaints; 1 tornado watch. ENGAGED ifeA d Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hicks, 302 Michigan St,, Walkerton, announce the engagement of their daughter, Rosemary Ellen, to Thomas Julius Berdt, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Berndt, Sr., 726*2 Roosevelt Rd., Walkerton. The bride-elect will graduate from John Glenn High School in May. Mr. Berndt is serving with the U.S. Navy. A September 6 wedding is planned. Summer Festival Plans Becoming More Complete Plans for the Summer Festival are underway throughout Walkerton for June 6 thru 9. The committee headed by Erwin Stunt z met again Monday night at his recreation Kall. Orders for tents are being taken by Ed Walz. Clubs and organizations are urged to turn in the amount of space they need to Mr. Stuntz. Anvone participating with a float are tn contact Al Boise. Any individual wishing to display their arts or hobbies are urged to turn in their reservation space to Mrs. John Powell. Cake decorators in the area who wish to compete for a trophy for the best judged decorated cake are to sign up with Mrs. Tom Anspaugh. Ralph Neiswender at the Town and Country Store is taking signups for the garden tractor contest which will be followed by a second competition of an obstacle driving contest. Plans for a Festival Queen are underway and will be staged at the Walkerton Alumni banquet Saturday June 8. Singing groups are invited to register with Mahlon Jacob to entertain following the band concert Thursday, June 6. Anyone with a horse is invited to participate in the open class horse show on Sunday, June 9. Registeration will be on the grounds for halter, contesting and riding events. Church s< rvices will be 10:30 in the center ring. Each event will be a real attration no one will want to miss. Plan on attending nil four days at Walkerton June 6 throu 9. Memorial Day Parade Plained For Walkerton The annual Memorial DayParade will be held in Walkerton on May 30. 1968. The pa lade route will stint from the High School parking lot an I match to the ('< metery and back to the parking It. Line up time will be 10:30 mau h at 11:00 a.m. The American Legion Color Guard and Firing Squad will lead the parade as in the past. Everyone is welcome to join in this tribute to our honored dead. Boy Scouts. Cub Scouts, Gill Scouts and any other organizations who wish to march or have a float may do so. Children with decorated bicycles are welcome. I would like to take this opportunity to ask everyone to display the American Flag on this Memorial Day. Any questions about the parade contact Ed Klopfenstein, parade chairman. Walkerton Lions Elects New Officers The Walkerton Lions Club at the last meeting, elected a new slate of officers to take office on July 1, 1968. Chosen unamiously by the group were: Clyde Bick, president; William Bouse, first vice-president; O. C. White, second vice-president; Harold Muncie, third vice-pi esident; Bob L’rbin, secretary-treasurer; Alvin Boise. Lion Tamer; Keith Knepper, Tail Twister; two-year directors. Robert Stockwell and Roy Freeman; one-year directors (carry-over) Jack Tiede and K. C. Chapman; and immediate past-president, Harry M-chling. The chib has many activities planned for the coming months and needs the cooperation of all to continue their outstanding efforts <>f community bettermen. CHAMBER MEETING TODAY AT NOON The Walkerton Chamber of Commerce will have their regularMay meeting today, Thursday, at mxin at the Paddle Wheel Restaurant. □ □ OBITUARIES □ Q Mrs. France* E. Koch Mrs. Frances E. Koch. 65, of Rt. 3. Walkerton, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday in the Buchanan Community Hospital. Buchanan, after a five-month illness. Born <>n Dec. 19. 1902, in Chicago, she had lived in the Walkerton area 12 years, coming from Chicago On Aug. 18. 1923, in Chicago, she was marrie 1 to Harold Lewis Koch. He died in 1961. Surviving are her mother. Mis. Elizabeth Peschel, Koontz Like, Ind.; a son. Dr. Han I 1 Frank Koch, Galien, Mich.; a daughter, Mrs. Martha E. Wolfenberger, Walkerton; and five grandchildren. Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Nusbaum Funeral Home, Walkerton. Rev. Harold E. Williams, pastor of the Uniti-d Methodist . Church, Walkerton, officiated. Burial was in Woiidlawn Cemetery , Walkerton. She was a member of the W’alkerton Order of Eastern Star 319. Members of the order conducted services at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. She was a past matron of the TriState Chapter of the Eastern Star in Chicago and a member of the Past Matrons Club in Walkerton and of the Koontz Like Conservation Club. Ruth Williams Mrs. Ruth Virginia Williams. 70. route 3, Walkerton, died at 4 a.m. Sunday at her home of an apparent heart attack. She was the wife of John B. Williams. Mrs. Williams was born May 17, 1897 at Tippecanoe. Ind., to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elliott. She lived in Walkerton for the past 32 years, coming from Tippecanoe. She was married to Mr. Williams on Nov. 25. 1910 at Tippecanoe and he survives. Also surviving are two sons of a p.evious marriage, Franklin Champer, Plymouth, and Charles Champer. route I. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at th< United Methodist church in Walkerton, the Rev. Harold Williams officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Walkerton.
