Legion and Its affiliated organizations expended more than $9 million on behalf of children and youth. The American Legion for 43 year has been a pacesetter in the child welfare field through its support of sound state and federal programs for the health and well-being of children. The American Legion Welfare Foundation, Ind., has made giants in excess of $250,000 to stimulate reseaich efforts into unsolved problems affecting children and youth. The American Legion Child Welfare program is a post-and- < anmunity-centered program. It s primary interest is in the children of your town. Salman Fishing Real Boom To Hoosier Anglers One of the biggest fishing booms over enjoyed by Hoosiers is predicted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in reviewing salmon fishing prospects in Lake Michigan. Early in the spring of 1967. commercial fishermen began taking salmon in gill nets. The Departments of Natural Ra-
sources immediately issued a discretionary order protecting salmon and steelhead trout in Indiana waters. Now salmon are again returning to southern Like Michigan in large numbers. Troughout 1967 and this winter commercial fishermen have continued to collect salmon data for the Department. To facilitate this fact-gathering made possible only because of the special watercraft and nets necessary to commercial fishing research permits have been issued to commercial fishermen to study migration patterns, growth rates, size, food habits and abundance. Research permits that salmon and steelhead trout are abundant at the mouths of streams an 1 at hot-water discharges of powergenerating plants. These fish are near the shore and dose to the surface. The permits arc issued on the basis of grill nets, time and location as needed for fact-finding. The fishermen are then permitted to sell their catch after needed data are obtained. Indiana s information is being shared with other authorities in order to learn more about lake salmon. The order creating research permits also changed the opening date for legal salmon fishing to March 1. with a year-round open

A person may have 5 fish of a single species or 5 combined, but not 5 of each species (the possession limit being 101.
