Time Is Still A Problem
Time is still a hot issue in Indiana Despite the confu^i- n and contradiction^ the time issue has had for many years, it is still a probbm and n» that c uld cause mote haid feeling* in the future than it has in the past if Dial is possible. Now facing Indiana is the possibility of half the state being on "double fast time'' this ‘ summer, or rather for the six month period from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. This is due to the fact that th- 1 (astern part of the state which is supp sed to be on fast time now. is s > ordered to follow the Eastern Time Zone by going on Eastern Daylight Saving Time this April 28. This Would leave that portion of the state one hour faster than the rest who usually is on Central Daylight Saving Time. The question then arises, what about the areas that have been operating on fast time this winter that aren t supposed to accordin. to the tie line drawn and adopt* d in Washington in 1966? Marshall county is one <>f these < mties that according to the boundries should Im- on slow time this winter, but chose to make the switch to fast time. Despite all that has been written and discussed about this time issue, there will be no satisfaction until someone, whether it be the State or the Federal Govt rnment makes a decision and makes one that CAN be enforced. To date, there is nothing that can be done to any area that decides to go on what ever time they desire. If enforcement was possible, then it would be something else. It certainly is getting to be a headache in this area where all the time, one side or the other is effected by the difference in the six winter months. Now to have added confusion possible for the year round, just adds insult to injury. It looks like the chances for the entire state to be on one time is almost an impossibility, but if it must be split, a little more sense can be made than is presently the case where it is just "pot luck" as to who is on what time.

In spring, the topcoats begin to vanish, car windows open, the convertible tops go down, the kites begin flying briskly in the strong breez<s, the baseballs begin to fly in the air and the children are playing out-of-doors much more. The glamour of this weather changes the lives and desires us a young and old alike. Spring is the romantic time of year and a busy time for most -schedule* as many activities cur-tail«-d by the weather are again appearing <nn the m • ne. With the coming of the out «if doors weather, traffic becomes more evident The childr-n playing In the yards and darting into the Streets after a ball, a dog or chasing one another b*<<imei» a threat. The more strenuous play and desire for outdoor activities comes to all. But this can all vanish in nn instant with an a< Cidcnt of injury through Hu Stepped up artivitv. The Department of Trans* p->rtati<n. who has been working on the tim< issue for some time, sot up a line that basi< ally splits the state in half. However, the number of counties that were supposed to be on C.ntral Standard Time and those that are. is two different things. Many people favor what wo have known a* fast time all year round while many others iike the six months of fast and six months of standard. However. this double fast time would really be a switch. If this is the case, a g(K»d share of the state would have daylight in the summer months to 10 p.m. and later, giving them a rather weird day. This happened in Michigan last year and many reports from that state declared dissatisfaction with this set-up as it was simply light too late. All the letters that can be written, the protests that can be lodg<d in person and everything else will have little effect now. Mayor Allen in South Bend has already emphasized that South Bend will stay on the time ordered in 1966. This means six months of each fast and slow. However. the decision of Plymouth is something else. They choose to swatch to fast time in the six winter months making the difference between St. Joseph and Marshall and Starke and Marshall counties a very inconvient thing. Now we will have to wait and see what developes this summer as evidently the summer time for Marshall County again wall depend upon what Ply mouth chooses to do. The Transportation Department stated they didn't have enough time to work on this situation. However, it doesn't seem like it would take very long to say yes or no to whether the state would be put on fast or slow time. The confusion that has racked Indiana should be answer enough to anyone that a suitable and enforcable time should be reached. Until that time, what time is It can remain to be a very challenged question in Indiana.
