rOOTBALL IS NOW MAKJog it big and is sharing the api is headlines, but lookout I us baseball situation is just beguu ing to get fun in the Amerian League. Mayo Smith made .< st itement early in the season that September is no time for lite weak-hearted, and with a i ve and possibly a six team race haping up at this time, the statement couldn't be more true. AFTER TUESDAY NIGHTS action was over and a little <s.-* ssment of what had happen•l was made, it shapes up this thorough confussion! Four team are jammed within one gore with two losses being the different in that all important com nn. rung. Now a tie is held Chicago and Boston with Minnesota and Detroit just a game back. The next two weeks could tell a tremendous story for all of these teams as the doubleheaders? are su denly here in mass. Bad weather early in the season has forced twin bills on every teajyi and the one that can stand the pressure of this on their pitching staff, could gain a little margin at this point. However, with five teams battling it out. it appears that the race will have to go down to the wire between at least two teams. CHECKING THE CLUB BY club standings, we see that once again the White Sox are fatb>iing up on the lower squads with the exception of Boston. Ot) V than this, things rate pretty even here and there among the

five top teams. Detroit has had a whammy over Baltimore which accounts for their lofty standing at this time as the Tigers have won 13 of 16 from the Birds to gain the largest margin of one team over another at this point. THIS SCHEDULE IS ALSO an important item at this time. The White Sox have a favoring home schedule as does Boston by a large majority. The Red Sox are extremely tough in their home park. Minnesota and California play more on the road than they do at home which could hurt. Detroit is pretty well balanced between home and road. Each of the top clubs will have at least one more and usually two more series with each other. These games will be doubly important as a loss here not only hurts that team, but gives a win to one of their opponents. Action from here on out should be tremendous in the American League. THE NATIONAL LEAGUE also has quite a battle underway but it doesn’t appear to concern the top spot unless something very unexpected happens to St. Louis. Add to this fact that none of the other teams can get much of a streak going and you have St. Louis looking like a run-ai-way winner in that circuit. Behind the Cardinals are Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, Cincinnati. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh who could all move up for second, third or fourth, the other money spots in the final standings. TheSe clubs could all be covered by one blanket also, with the exception of Pittsburgh who took a double loss at the hands of the New York Mets recently to drop a little further behind the pat k. However, the hitting potentXd that the Pirates have could put them right back in the thick of things in a real hurry. THE BIGGEST BOOST FOR the American League is that with such tremendous race going, four of these five clubs involved in the batt 1< are really drawing much large” crowds to boost the league attendance. The league officials have hopes of a new yearly attendance mark which isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Only the White Sox are not packing them in consistently as they have been accused by sports writers and individuals alike of being a boring team despite the fact they keep winning. Fans like to see runs and runs are not a main part of the Chicago plan. It takes a lot of stolen bases and pitching to satisfy a fan like a couple of long balls at crucial points in the game. Even the addition of Rocky Colavito and Ken Boyer isn’t beefing up the Sox long threat to the extent that one expects to see some long hits every game. THESE TWO TRADES should have prettv well solidified the Sox chances if the pitching can keep up. However, the past week found the very strong relief pitching falter a little an I after all. they can’t be expected to turn in that perfect job every time. Keeping up with the Sox roster this year has been lik»> reading the complete farm system of a team as mana o r Eddie Stanky has pulled all the . I ri . stops and perhaps one or two too many in bringing players up and then sending them down again. The result could be disastrous in the end. Even the players may start worrying about their future on the Sox team as they know two have to go to complete the deals that brought Colavito and Boyer to the Sox. IT IS TOO BAD THIS YEAR that football will start interfering with this fine American League race, but in all probability. until one of the five teams folds. they won’t feel the presence of the pressure of the oblong ball too much.
