New Football Coach Named For North Liberty A new football coach has been selected for North Liberty High School to fill the vacancy left when Jack Lowe, coach for all of North Liberty's varsity years, accepted a similar position with Clay High School, also in the South Bend Community School Corporation. Norm Schmid, a former head coach in Michigan schools, was named by Bob Jones, director of athletics of the South Bend Community Schools. Schmid, who has been teaching in the Greene elementary and junior high schools, began his coaching career as an assistant football coach at Romeo, Mich., high school in the 1953-54 season. In 1955-56, he accepted the head job at Richmond, Michigan, as head coach where his team compil'd an 8-1 won and lost record. From here he went to Cassopolis for six seasons. His first team lost four games as did his final team at that school But in between, three seasons the school went untied and undefeated. In the 1961 season, the team was 8-1, giving the school top ranking in Class C and B in Michigan for these four years. The combined head coaching record is 52 wins and 10 loses. Coming to North Liberty for the 1967-68 school year, Schmid will be trying to keep an outstanding string alive at that school. Jack Lowe’s teams in six years of varsity ball, won 44 games, lost 11 and had three ties. Included in this the past three years has been records of 8-2, 9-0-1 and 9-1. However, graduation this year takes 12 members of these teams which will leave a considerable amount of rebuilding at many positions. Schmid was graduated from high school in 1942 at Amundson High School on the North side of Chicago. He had starred in football and wrestling. He spent three years in the Armed Forces, two of them in the European Theatre. After his service was over he entered Austin Junior College, in Minnesota, where he played football. After graduation from that school, he attended Michigan State and was a reserve tackle and a member of the varsity wrestling team. He graduated from Michigan State in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. Schmid and his wife Sylvia, have two children, Shari, 12, and Mark, 8. They live in South Bend.
