good portion of the day. With a 12 o'clock starting time for time trials, nothing was allowed on the track at this time as the 2' 2 mile oval was wet from morning rains. Then th.* rains would come and go all day long with consequently, no drivers getting on the track at all during the day. This leaves two more days of qualifying left yvith still a total of 65 ears to fight for starting berths. S >me of these cars will never lx* attempted in all probability as ’hey are hack up cars for some of the name drivers and others that simple enough speed to challenge the time needed to get in the starting field. H.mwr, a lot of different kind of .activity - will be present during these two davs. ON SATURDAY. THE DRlVers who do try. will have to be traveling real genl to make the field or their pits won t let their times hold up. There is no use putting a car in at a slow time if it isn't going to hold. Then after the next eight spots aie filled, the bumping of the slower cars will begin. This prewnts a lot of drama as the drivers get. on the track । nd try to get enough spe<*d from their machines to get them in the race. If they aren't running fast rjv.ugh, back m the • pits for more work and adjusting until a satisfactory speed can bu reached Another thing that happens is usually quite a shifting of drivers and cars. A drive> that gets bumped out, is always looking for another car and an owner, without definnte commitments or satisfaction with a driver, is always looking for a driver who can get his car in the starting field. EVEN THOUGH RACE DAY is two weeks away, action is always fast and furious in the month of May at Indianapolis. Practice continues daily until the tinal day of qualification runs is over and then the track is closed yvith the exception of the carburation runs a couple of days ahead of race day. During the time between the final qualifications and race day, the activity stays mainly in the garage as the ever prv.sent check and nt heck of the cars is done. THE STARTING LINEUP tor the nice after the first end of qualification runs is as follows: Fint Row Mario Andretti. Nazareth, Pa.. Brawn<*r-Ford. 16x 9x2 miles p. i hour. Dan Gurney, Santa Ana. Calif.. Eagle-Foid. 167.224.
