driver who has been plagued with bad luck for a long enough time; Par- . ih Jones, also a former winner and pilot of the most talkedabi ut car at Indianapolis in many years, a turbine-powered car entered by Andy Granatelli and the STP Division of Studebaker who seems to know no limit on money in getting a goxi shot at a winner. Also high respect is held for Lloyd Ruby, Roger McCluskey. Jim McElreath Dan Gu«-rmy and several of the rookies headed by New Zeabnder Chris Amon. This years’s race has more International flavor than any race for many years. Q DALIFYING TAKES FOl’R days. Saturday and Sunday foi two weeks are given to the drivers to get their machines in the 33 fastest starting line-up. Usually the weather has a big part to play as not in many years has four days of good weather been enjoyed by the drivers and nwnvn in their attempts. A good first day can fill over half the field as the top drivers in the faster cars like to get that upfront start on May 30. A driver has never started last and finishel first in this big ran and the way things h ive been going the past few ye.u 11 is b. ttei to be ahead of th" pack than to be in it as two early wrecks in the past three years has cut the field almost in half and caused restarts of the race. AKTER THE FIRST DAY OR two of qualify m 2, th« »i the fun begins. When the field is about fill<"d or is completely filled, the bumping practice ts-gins. Drivers, owners and mechanics then have no r<M>m to guess at the spiked necessary to get their car in. but must hit ovei a set spt »*d. This stalls a b>t of car jumping, wofl< on »<r , making all kinds of
changes and everthing else, to get a vehicle in the race. Even the owners who have back-up cats ' for the name drivers then begin to get anxious to get that second and third vehicle in the race. Even though the track isn't as busy on qualifying days like this, the action in the pits an I. in th® minds of those concerned is fast and furious. This is a different kind of excitement, but one you will never forget if you witness it. MORE WILL FOLLOW ON the big spectacle each week until the SUO is completed. A QUICK LOOK AT BASEball will also show some interesting developments. Even though the weatherman has had about as much to say about the early schedule as anyone, the play has been going on for four full weeks on a limited basis. It is about time for weather more appealing to baseball and the crowds will again begin to flock to tlie ball parks for the nation's number one game. THE SURPRISING START OF the Cincinnati Reds has to be nne of the surprises a! ng With the slow starts of sonu other teams such as the Dougrrs, Giants and defending world champions Baltimore Orioles. Many fine pitching gems hav. b»wn thrown already this year, but - the wierd no-hit game by Bn.tlmorr’s Steve Barber, assisted bv St Miller, has to be one of the odd ones of all time. Barber was lifted with two out and a no-hitter going pimply because he couldn't get the ball over plate. This proves a point to some extent, ti at wanning is put above everyth' ig els>* in professional sports. 'Dntiment was discarded in favm of trying to win the game. WITH THE NUMBER OF open dates and postponements that have occur. the pl iy is due to be picking p considerably in the near futu: ■ . Teams that .ire establishing ’. lemselves early as teams to bear are Cincinnati and Pill burgh . i the National League and Ih-Uoit. possibly Uhicag । ami even New York has made a much bet'er showing than many expected in the weeks of the seas. n. Andretti's 'cords Threatened in “500” Time Tria’s
slthouyh "raiibirds expect a genetai assault on 'lane Andrettis one lap and .ir-lap recards. opinions are si arpiy divided concerning the 1%7 . er of the [Mile position when t i e trials get under way Saturdav for the 51st annual Indianapolii 500-mile race on May 30. Andretti definitely is one of the fav iritee as the contenders continue their prepare hone for what apparently will 1 1 the greatest "speed day” in the history of the challenging two-and-a-balL mile track. But Jim Clark of Scotland, who h s earned frontrow starting petitions for three straight years, is a strong contender. A. J. Foyt, who won the No. 1 spot in 1965, is highly-regarded by many ol tl "experts and Lloyd Kuby is .mother threat. Trost then added another single to send Amor home with the tie-breaking and winning run.
