List Arts And Crafts Winners The second annual Aris and Crafts Contest was conducted Sunday afternoon with MS entries judged and exhibited at the Walke t<>n Elementary School according to Mrs Jack Tiede, general chairman. The affair was spons ued by the Epsilon Chi Chapter o Tn Kappa Sorority, the Polk Lincoln Johnson School PTA's including Tyner and Walkerton and the St. Patrick Woman's Club. THE LEGION CORNER At the close o: the Civil War, a group of women in Columbus. Miss., honored both Confederate and Union dead by placing flowers on their graves. When the news of this act of compassion reached the North, it helped to heal the recent wounds the young nation had suffered. The greatest impetus for setting aside the holiday which has become known as Memorial Day or Decoration Day was given in 1868 by Gen. John A. Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. He issued his historic order to all chapters to set aside May 30 as a day for decorating the graves of the heroic dead. This sacred duty is now the obligation of every American Legion Post. Not only does the responsibility conform completely with the Legion’s dedication to the memories of Americas departed heroes, but also it helps to instill a firm meaning of patriotism in a younger generation of Americans. No one can say how much the character of American has been molded, and will continue to he shaped, by childhood memories of Memorial Day parades to the
