time as it settled absolu'-lv nothing .Meanwhile Alab ma was going through a leaser schedule with less specta< ’ar plain and most would com ■ I that they weren't in the true i u as number one. NOTRE DAME FINALLY was awarded the spoils for u ng number one. but a question .Lill sticks in the mind of any wh< soil the Notre Dame and Michigan State game as this pitted two fine football trams with different styles of play. Aflei viewing this battle, p< :s, n thoughts of yours was that if the trams played 10 times Michigan State would definately come out ahead They weren't the high scoring tram the Insh were mainly because they didn't us< the forward pass as much in their style of play. Defensively th< Spartans appeared to have an edge even though Notre Dame'.final record of points scene against was less, but so was tl e caliber of the!! opponents. THE RESULT IS THAT THE qm.-tion was nevi •• settled on the gridiron and to st-tth such an argument <>n paper is impossibh HoM EVER. NOTRE DAME IS now number one in one department in lootball! The announcement tin past week of their in•r. is< m pi ices makes them number one over the pros and the p' os and everyone. Tiny certainly will l« number one m reaching in the fans pocket* to let them see a football game in th< -dladoU of lh« Golden Dome THE A NNf >IT N( 'EM ENT th d tn kets w< nt up again i ■ the third time in recent certainly wasn t ><d news to th Irish football fans Regvk tt< k- ts for games were s\(Hi a f. w years ago. the season ticket holder got a break ns they stayed $5.50 on a season basis, or <27 50 for a .-.eat for the tive home games. Now. all went up to 6.5 U, raising single admissions for 50 cents and season ticket holders SI.OO a game. A season ticket now is $32.50. SEVERAL REASONS (OR excuses i have Deen unofficially. <>ne is the ever rising athletic department costs. This is undoubtedly true Notre Dame also playsfive games away from home m which the visiting team shares in the profits. They play oppun- • nts this year that combined can only seat 327.000 fans as opposed to a total last year of about 60.000 more. This will cut down their road revenue. It has been stated that Notre Dame now will not put a team on their schedule that plays in a stadium that seal*; bss than 60.000. This will not be in eff« ct for a while as the schedules are made some eight years in advance. EVIDENTLY THEY HAVE not counted out their total capat - ity lat« ly. A crowd of 60.000 is only possible with field bleachers Now multiply out this 60.<>00 by the price of the ticket and see what you get. Os course, not al! Notre Danie seats are sold as the students don t pay for tlu irs. but also, box seats cost more that the n gular seats by quite a bit. It 1. oks liki the almighty dollar has taken <>ver at Football University. It all boils down to a simple qmstion. "What would ticket prici s b< now if they had a 3 an I 7 i ccord last year?” THE STRANGE PART OF this whole story is the similarity <>f income derived by Notre Danie and a professional football team that plays more games, but often in parks much smaller and to crowds that are much smaller. Add to this the fact that larger salaries an- involved in professe nal sports, plus rent foi stadi.ims. etc. It is known that college football supports almost all the athletic costs for a sch«Hd. but still this price incrixise seems steep to a college football game. It sure is going to eliminate the rhan< e of younger kids to see games on their own. The funny part of it is. th<*c of us who aren’t happy with this Increase will continue to shill out the cabbage to get the tickets again this year to see the home game- Strange world isn't it. Don't preach unless you can pi a« tice if the occasion arises.
