Most of the earth's original supply of water probably is still in use. reports the U. S. Geological Survey. Little has been added or lost in the hundreds of millions of years since the first clouds f<>rmi-d and the first rains fell. The same water has bu n pumped time and again from the oceans into the atmosphere, dropped upon the land and transferred back to the si: In this cycle st any instant, only about .5 gallons of every 100,000 gallon of the total water supply is in motion; most is stored in the oceans, lakes, streams and glaciers, or detained underground. The first wind tunnel used to test a heavier than air device antedated powered flight by more than 30 years. It was devised in 1871 by two British engineers and consisted of a steampowered fan that blew air over a glider model mounted in the tunnel. Small lakes and even laboratory evaporation plates can be used to study weather patterns . over the Great Lakes and oceans, 1 a University of Wisconsin meteorologist has found. He reports that similar patterns of air mass modification have been obI served in studies of large lakes, the North Atlantic and an evaporation plate only several inches in diameter. Rubber flashings that result when soft rubber products are molded can be quickly removed by using carbon dioxide to freeze the products, says Cardox, Chicago. Previously, workers cut the flashings with scissors -a long and costly process. Now the products are dumped into a “tumbler.” frozen with an injection ot CO2 and tumbled in the barrellike machine until all the flashings, brittled by the cold, have broken off. Michael Warrrn tested 34 felines at intervals of more than one year and found that half of them preferred one paw over the other. Space scientists at Cornell University, report that what appear to be solid' rocks on the moon's surface may crumble easily and present no danger for space vehicles. The researchers say that recent photograph.* of the lun ir surface indicate that the moon is covered with a layer of rock dust at least six inches deep and probably much deeper. The lunar dust also appears to be fairly well compacted and should present no serious difficulties for a man walking on it.
