PRO FOOTBALL HAS PASS<d the halfway nnrk in the resiwctive leagues and the Western Division in the NFL looks as if t may be all bn decided right •1 »w unless some. ae soon finds »4t how to beat the Green Bay Packers. has been on top for several years although th , didn't win all the titles lately, but have been one of the real powers. Their grizzled veterans .... still doing the job and slowly they have been working in several top caliber young players to sp. 11 the x ts although they haven't done anything about a replace ent for Bart Starr in the way . ’ youth. holds you, liM»k out, they will be r well rested when they lire called <>n again. There isn't great unbal- r ance in the time thv detense plays over the time the offense is in there such as some teams suffer. BALTIMORE IS A BOLT THE only team left with a chance to catch the Packers. The Rain were sailing Well for a while, but their ship was rocked and almost capsized in recent weeks. Theii loss to Baltimore Sunday was just about the straw that broke the camel s back as far as championship is con< ci ned. The Bears. Vikin ,s. 49'ers. and Lions are r< solved to be p filers if they arc going to have anything to say aboin who wins the division title. THE EASTERN DIVISION IS a little different. St. Louis and Dallas are both sailing along with only one loss and a tie ia game they battled to 10-10 against each other. Washington has come fast lately and Cleveland is still in the wings just waiting for a chance to move up on top should one or both of tiie other teams stumble. Dallas, with probably the fastest offensive stars in the game with receiver Bob Hayes leading the way, has developed into a real high scoring outfit and have assembled a very sound defensive club as well. St. Louis gained a reputation as being a Johnny-Come-Late team and have had some tremendous second half rallies against their opponents. Cleveland has surprised everyone a little with their strong performances again without the service of Jimmy Brown, undoubtedly the best runner the pros have ever seen. A litle more passing and still a good ground attack behind sonic ferocious blin king has continued to let the Browns win THE AFL HAS COME A king way in their brief history, but still the lack of defense that has made the Natiortal Football League what it is today. They have achieved more balance as well as now anyone is beating anybody else on a given day. They still stn-m to be short something from being n ady to mix it up all the time with the NFL teams, but give them a few years and a common draft and things migdil be different before too long. MONDAY NIGHT'S GAME between the Bears ana Cardinals certainl.' proved one thing to football fans. They still want to see action. With two stumbling offense* and a good game of drop the hankie by the officials, this devel p< ! into one of the dullest games anyone has ever sat throii h behind a TV set. Despite the closeness of the score, 24-17. and the fact th. t a few outstanding plays Were seen, this game offered very little in the way of eycitci..ent. This is the .same a.s in baseball The team that gets the hits hits the homeis and scores Ha* runs, i> still a much more interesting team to watch than the sin,bs. walks, balks, stolen bases an I 2-1 or 1-0 ball games. The fans pay to sc action and H they don t. Ha y aren't happy. THE WIDE OPEN PLAY with sui prises and scoring Is still the game the spixtator likes to set* whether it be foi tball. baseball or basketball It would seem that even a high scoring team that is one-sided, is pr<ferred basically over the low scoring game even if it i close. It you think n >t. just give a little thought to the recent World scries aid law you weren t on the edge of your than in this farce. ETTiWE I riday. Saturday - Xov, I A 5 Shows 7 and 9 pan.
