Plans Set For ■ PTA Activities * In Walkerton The Parent Teachers Association <>f the P-L-J School System met Thursday. Sept. 15th, at the Elementary gym Mrs. John Powell. president, opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag. Mrs. Ray Chapman gave the devotions. The budget for the year was presented and approved. Program year books were distributed. The Room Count was taken with winners being Mrs. Alvin Boise. 4th grade room, first; Miss Eilene Travis. 3rd grade room, 2nd: Mrs. Wilder Burnside. 3rd grade. 3rd: and Mrs. William Heim, second grade. 4th. The Walkerton Elementary i teachers were introduced by Mr. Hartman, principal and Harold Muncie, principal of John Glenn, introduced the high schwl teachers. Mrs. Harold Knowlton, health chairman, reported that eye tests 1 would be given ths week. Tuberculosis tests will be given in the near future. The P. T. A. Fish Fry will be held October 1. serving from 5 to 8. at the John Glenn High School. Adults will pay SI.OO and chil- 1 dren 65c. THE LEGION CORNER There has been official notification of the action of <he National Convention in establishing a new period of eligibility for membership in the American Legion. The resolution was passed by the convention delegates, and sent to Congress where it was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate, and signed by President Johnson while the convention was still in session. Thus making it official. Veterans ot the Viet Nam period (beginning August 5. 1964) are now eligible to be enrolled in any American Legion Post. Any person who has served on active duty in the Army, Navy Marine Corps, or Air Force of the United States at any time on or since August 5, 1964, may now be accepted in the American Legion. provided his period of active duty was under honorable conditions. Service in the Viet Nam area is NOT a requirement for membership. The present period of eligibility will end with the cessation of hostilites as determined by the Government of the United States. To those of you who are eligible and wash to obtain further information, contact Commander Flaugher or Vice Commander Wooley. They will be more than glad to have you. Following are some actions of the 48th annual national convention: CHILD WELFARE Reaffirmed the American Legion's concern and fight against dangerous drugs, pornographic literature. V. D. and juvenile delinquency. Drafted new blueprints on public welfare, school lunch and milk program. Noted that regardless of all the publicity, only three per cent of the American youth ever become involved with the law or engage in detectible anti-social behavior. AMERICANISM Calk'd for remedial congressional action to restore the balance of power among the various branches of government. Support legislation which would
make it a crime to desecrate the American Flag. Opposed legislation providing for federal registrati >n or control of firearms. Condemned any and all persons or groups in this country advocating the collection of blood for the Viet Cong. Commended the FBI directir J. Edgar Hoover.
