Gail Ross Paces Shamrocks To 40-0 Triumph Over John Glenn
Gail Ross, the most outstanding football player of teams of smaller size in this area, paced the North Liberty Shamrocks to a lop-sided win over John Glenn High School Friday night in the opening game for both teams. Ross scored four touchdowns and kicked two extra points as the veteran studded Shamrocks extended their streak of unbeaten games to 19 over the very young and inexperienced Falcons of John Glenn. On the punt that followed, Ross took the ball for 58 yards and apparent TD. only to have a holding penalty call the play back. Three plays later. Mike Summerfield took the ball straight through the middle, veered a little to his left in the secondary and outran everyone for a 53-yard touchdown gallop. This came with 8:00 left to play in the first quarter. Ross kicked the extra point and it was 7-0. Again the Shamrocks kicked off and once again the Falcons could not penetrate the experienced Shamrock defense and had to punt. This time after three plays on a fourth and three situation, Ross circled his right end and was trapped short of the first down, only to break three tackles and streak down the sidelines for the second score. He again kicked the point and it was 14-0 with 4:00 minute* still left to play in the quarter. The Shamrocks kicked into the end zone, but on the second play from scrimmage. Wes Peters n picked off a Craig DeMver pas.; at about the 25 and raced into the end Zone for the third TD

of the quarter. The try for point was blocked and the Shamrocks held the lead 20-0. Two plays after the kickoff, Ross intercepted a pass, but this time John Glenn held on the fourth down play and took over after four plays had been run in the second quarter. The Falcons then controlled the ball the rest of the period, picking up three first downs on the way as the young boys began getting the feel of things. The '■econu half started mu"h the same as the first. The Shamrocks hit pay dirt three times in the third period with Ross scoring all three. The Shamrocks received the kick but on the first play John Stasko intercepted a Jim Hurt pass. The Falcons gained one first down, but just missed a pass on the NL 45 on a fourth down play, giving the ball to North Liberty. With 5:00 minutes left in the quarter, Ross took a short pass from Jim Hurt and raced for the TD with the play covering a total of 34 yards. Kent Naragon kicked the point after and it was 27-0. On the first play following the kickoff. Ross picked off a high floating pass by DeMyer and ran 34 yards into the end zone. Naragon again converted and the score was 34-0. The final TD came on a 12-yard scamper by Ross after Hurt had intercepted another DeMyer pass. This point was missed and although over a quarter remained, the scoring for the night was completed. The ball changed hands five times in the final period but neither team could sustain a drive to score. The Falcons had possession on the NL 20 yard line when the final gun sounded. Everything considered, it was a good win for North Liberty although they easily outclassed the Falcons. However, the very young and inexperienced John Glenn team had little to be ashamed of as they showed a lot of hustle and desire and show the need of much experit nee to be playing some real good football. They certainly displayed a hi more in this losing cause than the fans of the former Walkerton team saw <>n most occasions. North Liberty has another fine team
