F. Condon Executive Secretary Joe A. Harris, Chairman Town Board News At the regular meeting of the Walkerton Town Board on Tuesday, June 20, several matters came before the board and were discussed, and some acted on. The annual contract for the garbage collection in Walkerton was given once again to Frank Hahn, who has had the garbage collection job for many years. Frank, and his son, Leigh Roy, were awarded the contract for $3,000, the same amount it has been for several years. A bid of S2BOO, entered by Walter Pickavet, was by-passed on the board’s reasoning that the work of Hahn has been very .satisfactory for many years and he was tory so rmany years and he was awarded the contract despite the lower bid. A discussion for the street Work in Walkerton this year was held prior to advertising for bids on this work. Street commissioner Russell Ruby was authorized to place a processed base in the Industrial Park for the portion that isn’t blacktopped. This will allow this work to bi' completed this summer. Also to be included in the Industrial Park area is an approach drive along U. S. 6. The board plans to have the proposed budget for the coming year completed at the next meeting, August 2. Valuation figures from the County haven't yet been received in order to figures the proposed tax rate. This year the rate for the Town of Walkerton is $1.44. A request from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jackson, 507 Georgia St., was read and discussed. They asked assistance in correcting the surface water problem in the area they live. This matter has been referred to the street - sewer department for review and suggestions. NFONews The regular monthly meeting of the St. Joseph County NFO was held Monday night, July 18, at the North Liberty Community Building, with President Loyal Burkholder, presiding. In the absence of Claude McEndarfer, the grain chairman. Lawrence Snyder gave a report on both meat and grain. Snyder said that NFO is now doing business with seven of the largest meat processors in the United States. Also have signed master contracts with several of them. We must have the member’s meat reports three months in advance, as to approximate date to be sold. Reports now due are: August, September and October. We cannot bargain for meat that we do not know NFO members have. On grain, the wheat storage and sales agreement contracts are now available at Claude’s, so stop in at your earliest convenience and sign up. It is very important that we store that grain and bargain for a price. NFO also has a selling period at harvest on all grain for those that can’t hold their grain. Members by all means sell with the NFO boys. We proved to the nation last February 23 when NFO sold large quantities of grain, we can bargain for a price by holding and selling together, consequently higher soybeans, corn and wheat
