To Be Widened And Surface Coated Work is scheduled to start on State Road 23 around May 1 a’ the North Liberty to Mayflower Road section is scheduled to be widened and re-urfaced. The Ruth-Riley Const ruction Co. has received the go-ahead s.gn for the work as they were the low bidder at $432,812 in bids opened several weeks ago and then held under study. The section of road to be in;>proved will complete work done jn Indiana 23 in recent years that in< hided from the St. JosephStai ke C unty line to Mayflower Road. The Starke County to W likerton -ect.on was done with a resurfacing only and the Walkerton to North Liberty section was widened from 20 to 24 feet and resurfaced This is the same work that is to he done on the North Liberty to Mayflower section. Indiana 23 has long been a road that needed work and failed to get it. A few years ago. quite an effort was made from Starke County right to county officials of Su Joseph County including Walkerton and North Liberty, to get some action on this road. A hearing with the State Highway Comonission led to plans being I made to include th sin the Federal Aid to Secondary road program of the Federal government. This would share costs between the Federal and State govemmentH This plan was dropped as it was seen unadvisable. due to the fact that n^uch right-of-way had to lie purshase i and considerable changes made in some sections to meet the FAS regulations. This project would have totaled over $1 mullion and would have cost considerably more for the state than the present plan. The pb ns nov| call for widen* ing each side two feet, 24 feet overall, and the adding of a three inch blacktop surface. No curves will be relocated. The type of road to be laid will allow traffic to drive on it* iru just a matter of a few hours after completion of the work No major detours will be involved The work will take approximately f.ve mon h. to complete.
