Doug Lute Is Winner Os Lions Athletic Award Doug Lute, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lute, was the winner of the 1966 Walkerton Lions Club award as the outstanding senior athlete of Walkerton High School. The award was presented Doug at the Lions meeting held Tuesday nigh* that found 42 of the high school athletes in attendance. Tlie award is based os several different factors: athletic ability, career, improvement shown, attitude on and off the floor, sportsmanship, and scholarship. It was the 19th award given by the club and the second time in 19 years that a brother of a former winner received the trophy. Terry Lute, now in college in Indianapolis. was the 1965 winner Joe Dinehart. assistant athletic direc tor and business manager at Purdue University, was the main speaker of the evening Joe, a former player for Infayette Je ferson High School and Notre Dame, related s me interesting stories of conditions of his day in the 1920 s. He also gave a very interesting and informative talk to the boys, reminding them to always play the game according to the rules. He stre sed that the most valuable asset we have is the youth of today who becomes the busine snnn or leader of the future and that the way a boy plays by the rules determines his tomorrow A good crowd of Lions and a few guests were present for the meeting held at the American Legion Dining Room A report of the nominating committee placed the names of the officers for the next year in nomination and left the nominations open until next meeting for any nominations from the floor at. that time before the vote Is held. Those nominated are: Denslow Doll, president; Harry Merhling. Cast Ready For N. L. Operetta The cast of the North LibertyHigh School Chorus operetta which is to be given this Thursday and Fri<lay, March 21 and 25, will differ for some of the leading roles. On Thursday night. Cindy will be played by Pat Snyder an 1 on Friday night Cindy will be played by’ Louise Marek. The story follows the plot of Cinderella and for Cindy's two step-sisters, Kathy Zook and Carol Parodey will play the roles on Thursday night, and Ellen Baughman and Jackie Sokola will play the roles on Friday night. Greg McEndarfer and Jeanne Rudynski are cast as Cindy's father and step-mother. Others in the oast are Craig Kaser, Neil Baughman, Lee Snyder. Margaret Mangus. Jack Bonham, Ramona Lushbough and Nancy Mangus. Pianists are Paul Humphries and Patsy Harbaugh and drums will be played by Mike Knepp. Mrs. David Spellman is directing. The name of the operetta is Cindy and will be presented at 7:45 pm. each evening in the high school gym. Admission prices are 75c for adults and 50c for all students. Four N. L. Students Win Ribbons In Science Fair Four students of the North Liberty Elementary School won ribbons at the South Bend Community’ School Science Fair held on March 19 at South Bend Washington High School Winning special honors from North Liliertv were: Jim Donathen. 2nd. with his tornado project; Kenneth Sponger. 3rd. with his traffic safety display; Tom Fair. sth. weather instruments; and Pamela Claeys, sth with her chickens and tile project of foods make the difference. ENGAGED Ml • • • -i, The engagement of Miss Darlene Allsop to Bernard Hutchins is announced by her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Abie Worster, San Juan. Tex. Mr. Hutchins is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will.am Hutchins of Loring. Ont. Miss Allsop is a graduate of the PS.J A High School, Pharr. Texas, and is presently employed at Wells Aluminum Co., North Liberty. Mr. Hutchins, a North Liberty’ resident, was graduated from Walkerton High School and is employed by Cummins Engine Corp., South Bend. The wedding will take place April 30 in the North Liberty Methodist church. □— - □ DEATHS □— — □ Iceland Slump Leland Stump. 15. son of Mr. ami Mrs Wilbur Stump, Rt 2, Fort Wayne, died March 12 at the Parkview Memorial Hospital where he had been a pa’i nt for 3D months. He was born in South Berni and had lived in Fort Wayne the last nine years. He was a member of the Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren He was president of the freshman class of Leo High School, member of the. student council, and a member of the National Junior Honor Society of Secondary Schools. Also surviving are two brothers. Stanley and Norman; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stump, South Bend, and Quinter Erbaugh of Greenville. Ohio Memorial services were held at the Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren, March 14. with Rev. W. Dav d Albright officiating. Burial was in Lindenwood Cemetery’. Preferred memorials are gifts to Manchester College. Edwin W. Fairbanks Edwin W. Fairbanks, 61. of R. R. 3. Walkerton, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday in Marshall County Parkview hospital, Plymouth. He had been in failing health for the past two years. He was born May 28. 1901 in Mannington, W Va., c< ming to Koontz Lake 15 years ago from Chicago. He was married July 13. 1935. in Chicago to Clara Burkhardt. Mr Fairbanks was employed at Beatty Memorial hmpital at Westville. Surviving with the widow is <>ne sister, Mrs Estella Hu er of Berne. Lions See Scouting Films At the recent dinner meeting of the North Liberty’ Lions, held In Du 'eck's Country Restaurant, Scoutmaster Roy Clark of the North Liberty Boy Scouts, showed movies of the boys in action The films showed various camping, boating and woik projict- in which the boys have been engage | in recent years. Os special interest to the Lions in attendance were the films of the scout trips down Potato Creek, beginning at North Liberty. Scoutmaster dark, who has worked in Scouting for many year-, made a plea for additional adult leaders to help in this fine program. He emphasized that sonic of the troops are in danger of being dropped completely because of the lack of adult leaders. Anyone in the North Liberty community who would like to donate his time to such a worthwhile project, should contact Mr. Clark. Walkerton Juniors Name Play Cast April 22 will be performance night for Walkerton High School Juniors, when "Jenny Kissed Me", a comedy by’ Jean Kerr, will be presented in the gymnasium. Koontz Lake Lions Hear Engineer On Lake Silt At a recent meeting of the Koontz Ijike Lion s Club a report from Denzil Doggett, registered professional engineer of Rome City, was read on the silt problem of Koontz Lake, which is in poor cond tion.
