Shamrocks Top Middlebury For 17th Win 82-71 North liberty s Sham rm ks had to come from behind Friday night to win going away as they overcame a g xxl Middlebury lead and a 37 point performance by the Middies Weirich to win 82-71. Trailing almost all of the first half, the Shamrocks moved ahead in the third quarter and then raced on to their 17th win in 18 games. Weirich opene l the scoring V ith a lay-in Mlekodaj hit a free throw but Weirich then swished a jumper. Two succe.-- ive jumpers by Koselak gave the Shamrorks their first bad but that was quickly erased by a lay-in by Pletcher. Scott and Mlekodaj Caine back with baskets with 3:59 left to play in the first period. but Middlebury then hit ten Straight points in the next two minutes as Wortinger. Pletcher. Weirich. Pletcher and Weirich hit baskets in that order, the last four being lay-ins. The streaks continued though as- it was North (L/fbei'ty's turn and in the final 1:26 of the quarter. Koselak hit n free throw and Fraser. Knepp and Ginzer hit baskets to tie the game at 16-16 at the end of the period. The Shamrocks moved ahead briefly in the second stanza as Koselak hit a jumper but Weirich came back with two baskets in a row. Despite the fact that the Indians controlled the play most of the second half, they twice climbed within two points only to have the Lancers come back with rallies to hold onto the victory. The game opened with Geyer hitting first after intercepting a pass and racing for a lay-in with half a miute gone. Dave Huff tied the score with a one-hander from the side just eight seconds later. Wally Johnson hit a three-point play and Huff hit again from the corner pushing the Indians to a 7-2 lead with 1:27 gone. Hansen hit a free throw for I^aVille and Taylor and Geyer got baskets to tie the score al 7-7. Huff hit again, this time on a cripple, but Taylor pushed one in from the side for another tie. Geyer scored a lay in but Huff popped another from the corner Jerry Sheaks hit a 17-foot jumper but Herbster tied the score on a 16 footer. I-a-Ville then took a lead they never lost as Hansen hit a free throw and Taylor two straight baskets. Mike Westhues hit a turn-around shot from the lane, but Geyer pegged in a long jumper. Tim Gardner's lay-in with :08 left, made it 20-17 as the quarter ended. Scoring Tempo Picks Vp The second period was a real rat-race Geyer hit a jumper and a lay-in on another steal. Huff tossed in a lay-in but Herbster came back with a short shot underneath. Westhues hit two free throws, but Taylor and Geyer hit back-to-back to make it 30-21. Huff stuck another one in from the corner and Herbster and Mike Norris traded baskets. These two hit again for their teams, but tlien it was Hansen with a tip and Geyer a pair of free throws i for a 37-27 lead. Adam Mann hit his first point of the night from the charity stripe but Herbster put in two in a row as the lead grew to 14. Mickey Huffstetter tossed in a long one-hander but Herb-ter and Geyers back-to-back baskets made it 46-30. Johnson tipped in a basket and Geyer bombed a long jumper but Johnson again tipped in a missed shot. until the end of the period found Gardner anil Huff hitting consecutive baskets to trim the lead to 64-57 heading into the final stanza. In this period, Hansen hit first on a lay-in, but Johnson came back for the Indians with two straight baskets and Mann added a 21 footer to cut the lead to 66-63. Vance hit his first basket of the night from the top of the circle, but Johnson added another lay-in. Taylor made it 69-65. but Mann hit a moving shot in the foul lane to cut the lead to two before Vance to-wd another in from the top of the circle. Geyer came back with two baskets and the lead again was increased to eight. 71-67. Huff and Herbster traded baskets and then it was Huff and Geyer trailing two points. Geyers coming from the free throw line. He added two more one-pointers and a 10-poinl lead was enjoyed with 1:05 left to play. Huff hit one free throw awl then Walkerton picked up an odd four-point play on a basket by Norris and a foul uwler the basket on the shot which Huff hit both free throws, this coming with 31 seconih to play. Weigand and Norris traded baskets to make the final score 83-78. Geyer Hits 36 Roger Geyer hit 36 points to top all scorers as he totaled 13 baskets and 10 of 16 free throws. Several times he intercepted poor passes to race down for an unchallenged lay-in. Huff paced the Indians with 26 points as he hit ten baskets anil six of seven free throws. Tyner did manage to outscore the Dragons for the entire second half as they hit 17 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth while the Argos crew was hitting only 12 and 14 respectively. Rinard topped all scorers with 20 points on ten baskets. Lewis. O'Dell and' Warrick were all in double figures with 14, 12 and 10 respectively. Amor topped the Rddmen with 13 and Ross added 12 for the only players in double figures. N. L. Jr. High Ends BB Season Thursday The North Liberty Junior High teams close their seasons Thursday night at I^aVille. The games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. In recent games, the Liberty 7th grade team has had the following results: 7th grade tourney defeated Walkerton 18-21, 10-t in the finals to Rolling Prairie. 40-26; defeated Knox 34-22. won from New Carlisle by a 32-30 coimt. Coach Dunnuck's 7th grade squad has won 7 of its last 8 games, and has a season record of 8 wins and 7 losses going into tlie final game with LaViHe. The Liberty Bth graders also have an 8 and 7 record going into their final season game on Thursday night. After losing to Rolling Prairie. 36-32. in the Bth grade tourney, the team then defeated Walkerton 27-25 for consolation honor®: and in other recent games they lost, to Greene 42-37; defeated Knox 32-29. and New Carlisle 47-32. In the last three games, Ron Young has scored 20 17 and 23 points to lead the Shamrock scoring Tuesday. Feb 22. the Liberty sth and 6th grade teams play their final season games at home with two games against Knox. Public opinion is of little value to a nation if too many people express it privately.
