THE TWO MAJOR LEAGUES are just about reversod this year. With a little over a third of the season gone, the American League is really a rut rave at the top. The National League meanwhile has had one team, Hu? Los Angeles Dodgers, on top for quite a spell now. Usually it is the other way around. years the National League has gone right to the wire with two or even three teams having a chance right to the last day or two. For many years, the Yankees so dominated the American League th^t the most apparent battle was for second place. TWO THINGS HAVE CAUSED this switch. In tho American League, It is the Yankees. Yea even though they are in seventh place, the fact that they are losing more than they arv winning. has put the rest of the league in a dither. Minnesota, with their patented long ball, has come to the top. They are onlj, slightly ahead of four other trams. Chicago, Oov<|and, Baltimore and Detroit, as the last week’s action simply tightened the race instead of easing the pressure. THE FIVE WAY BATTLE IS a lime surprising as most figured the White Sox and Baltimore as the two teams along with the Yankees. However. Minnesota is getting some pitching to go with a lot of hitting and have made it known that they mean business. The Sox have again tho strong pitching, but not exactly like manager Lopez planned. Eddie Fisher, the star of the bullpen. has held the team together as EWSE Fri. & Sal., June 25 & 26 Get Yourself A College Girl Metrocolor Starring Chad Everett Mary Ann Mobley Joan O’Brien Nancy Sinatra Chris Noel Guest Stars - The Animals The Dave (lark Five ~—— ———-■ - Wednesday, June 23 20c Nite The Sheepman Metrocolor Glenn Ford Shirley Mac!.nine
both Peters and Pizzaro, the 1 fthanded slants of the staff, have been a little disappointing to date. Howevr, Fisher and his knuckleball, have saved many a game already this year and if he keeps going, it will he a big step forwaid for the Sex, BALTIMORE HAS MUCH more hitting than the Sox? but a couple of their big guns also have had trouble starting. Wally Bunker, the young 1 sensation of the ! caff last year, was finally begun to win after a very slow start Steve Barber still has a good game and n bad one. They have settled down as a team much more now than early as a couple of injuries hurt them at the offset of the season. CLEVELAND MADE SOME trades that added power to their lineup. However, the big push has be n made by their pitching a c Sam McDowell. Sonny Siebert and Luis Tiant. have come into their own. along with Ralph Terry übo came to the Indians in a winter trade. Detroit has made their push mostly on hitting as the ad 'it ion of Willie Helton's b ; g hat and good productive starts by Dick McAuliffe and Al Kalino have paced the offense. They are still weak in pitching, but good work by Mickey Lolich and Hank Aquirre have pepped up the team. BELOW THESE FIVF. TT IS Los Angeles who haven't had too much to crow about thus year due mainly to the inefficiency cf Dean Chance to win consistently. A couple of young hurlers. May and Newman, have, held them together. along with reliever B b Lee. Then it is the Yankees. Several times they have looked like they are ready to start their move, but each limo they hit another loss streak instead of picking up momentum. It still is too early to count them out, but if they don't snap to pretty quickly. the loss column will be too large to overcome. THE NATIONAL LEAGUE has been chasing the D<»dgers for some time. The two teams that look like the best bet to seriously challenge them all the way are the Braves and Cincinnati. the other power team. Both have good pitching potential, but the failure of one pitcher on each staff to live up to expectations, has hurt the respective teams BEHIND THESE THREE. NO one to date has shown what is n eed«l to get on top The Phillies and Cardinals ‘Should have the horses but it hasn't materialized. The Giants simply don t haxe what it takes with basically only Willie Mavs and Juan Marachial Their loss' of Orlando Cepeda all sesaon to date and possibly for the entire year, is more than they can stand with only a so-so pitching staff AND WTOLE ON THE SUBiect of baseball, don't think y>ur iye s are ptaynig tricks on you week end when you might happen to see a little football on TV Yes. the big star game >n Teen Dance BASS LAKE A DANCELAND Every Friday and Saturday Night FRIDAY Hail Brothers nnd Swingin’ Sting Rays SATURDAY Swingin’ Sting Rays Time K - 11 UK 35 Bass Lake Dnnttion SI.OO
