/Returned To Recreational Use

Koontz Lake has again been opened for recreational use. This release came from the Indiana Department of Conservation on Saturday, .June 12. as the Department at that tune declared the lake safe f< r swimming, boating and skiing. Following the Palm Sunday tornado, which has leit some permanent scars around this pleasant recreational lake, the department was forced to close the lake, due to the debris that was thrown into the water. This didn’t cause much hardship as the lake was too cold at that time for much use. However, as the summer season approached, much controversy was stirred up concerning the future of the lake.

It Was A Busy Week End

The past week end was a busy but pleasant affair. The American Legion's’ Third District Convention brought a lot of people and activity into Walkerton. The two-day convention certainly put some life into the old town. We must say "Hats Off" to the Walkerton Post 189 as hosts and to the entire delegation as the convention was certainly well behaved and enjoyable. The parade on Saturday night was

With the complete cooperation of a group of volunteers from the Indiana State Prison, work began in cleaning up the lake itself after weeks of working on the shore lines. The state also put scuba divers to work and combined the efforts of the shoreline work and the Ending of debris in the water that was later removed, has restored the lake to a safe condition. It is still possible that hazards may occur as some sunken debris could still break and push some objects around where it could be dangerous. If all concerned are careful, everything should be safe again to restore Koontz Lake to the wonderful recreational facility it has been in the past.

delightful and the town took on a different atmosphere for the two days. These conventions, although serious in their business, are a lot of fun and the entire group that watched the paiade shared in this fun. Congratulations to all the Legionnaires for their fine conduct and we certainly hope they all enjoyed coming to our town for their convention this year. Maybe they can return again in a few years for another such meeting.
