SATURDAY IS MAY IST AND t s is a big day in Indianapolis. T .is is the day that the In liana - dis Speedway <*n<*: for p 1 u - ’. - • for the bg M- >rial Day ‘ Mi 1 ’ R k ••■ Tr.i< y r. 6x cars h »e b en entered f n :h' gi • a test i c in the world and will fight ■ out for the starting 33 spots. Again this year, the talk is the r- u-engine cars as this new car j pped on the o'ene a couple of y <rs ago at Indianapolis, and - ms to pretty much have taken <» r in popularity. iFSPITE THEIR POPUI.ARit., which is dumon t rated by the f > -t that more r ai engine ears are entered than are the Offenh uisers they stiy haven't broken t । domination held t>y the < on-v.-utional OfTys since shortly after th- war. < >ul<l gel in one if they are satisfied with the new Cars offeiel them Mey. r-Drake has come out with a rnar engine a’^o which has a 1!< we I th- name Off. nhauser to still be connected w th the lat st in racing The advantage the roar engine cars have is the dis ferent design they now liave on the • hasis which allows a car to Is- bvthu des good for the track They definitely hava an advantage as far a< handling is concerned but to date haven't been able to dominate the scene. O T H F R IMPROVED!ENTS have, also been made. Firestone developed a Ure that ( was to be safe for the entire distance since the little cars like the Lotu es can easily hand’e the 500 miles. Last year gas was tried because of the better mileage, but that wi’,l be dropped this year so lowing the terrible accident and flaming death of two drivers last year. Two p.t stops are oompulsory this year so there wiV no advantage in burning gas over alcohol ANOTHER STEP UP HAS bet n made, ns now the rookies pass ng drivers tesla njust be qualified at a high, i s; red. They now have to hit 145 miles per hour under the m< reused limit With more speed all the time, it will b- standard pi< cv<lure to increase the rookie sanctioned speeds as «very year finds more and m >re rookies getting into the IndianapolLs acene. THE SCENE AT INDIANAPoIis will be a behive of activity starting this week end as the 6R < ars. many drivers, mechanics and pit crqws will begin the testing of tli various automobiles to get them ready for the qualification runs. The drivers will not on’y be li sting their cars for hand mg and s;»eed, they wili^ be driving others that eith r don't have a driver, or one Lhat meets their fa- y Many times the ear ass ;ned a driver doesn't satisfy an. and hy switches to another. Also, if a driver gets bumped in qualifications, he will get in another car and try to qualify that vehicle. TO REALLY GET AN OUTstanding fieW for the race, one thing is important that hasn’t come about in several years, that being four days of g<xxl weathei for the ten mi’i? qualification run. Usually, a coup’.e of days are windy, maybe rainy, or conditions just aran’t favorab’ f fast driving and the last day g*t . to be a rat race for cars trying to get on the track and iuii Th ie is always a line waiting wh-n th- fina\ day of qualifying end: as the ears waiting th ir turn nnver gets on the t rac k INDIANAPOLIS LS STILL BY far the greatest single racing • vent there is and this year will bo no exception The n volution of th new cars has again made it a mechani a’, battle, wliich it first started to be, as opposed to a battle of drivers a.- it developed for years as the Offenhauserwere the onl,y p^ver plants running with th- possible exception of a f'.w cars including the fam <1 Novi’s that are a’,ways so troubleplagued Talk will, be fast and if'K Us out of this famed plant ;t s the cars start running The only tiling missing will, b some of the big name drivers that are missin ; now due to tha accidents of this dangerous sport that have claimed several ^ives of outstanding drivers in thi past few years. Every precaution to prevent this at Indianapolis is taken and such as occured last year on the second \ap is hoped to be eliminat'd for good. THIS IS ONE REASON THE mandatory two pit stops was made It was figured that this would eliminate the highly exp’.jsive gasoline in favor of the less explosive alcohoV This accident put severa\ cars out of the race in addition to killing dnver*< Eddie Sachs and Dave MarDonnM Another name missing due to death the part year, is Bobby Marshman, the fastest on this track, who not only was pushed out of this race by car trouble, but had a career of trouble until his death came last summer in a shortor event. Rookie of the year, Dave White, also will be misring, due to injuries suffered last year but two old pros, A. J Foyt, the last year winner, and Jim Hurtibiso., a heavy-footed driver, have come back from seriopc injuries to get back in the running thus year. IN ADDITION TO FOYT two other former winners will be trying for a top starting spot and vr tory on May 31 They are Roger Wal'd and Parnell; Jones. These two are sure to be near the front, providing they don't have car trouble. Many other famous nanus will also be gunning for the win of the greatest apeetacle in rat ing come May 31. 1965, but official’,v starting the drive on May l this Saturday.
