would like to pass on to you a little history of their origin from now until Christmas time. There are stones of the hymns that are as interest)! g as the music is beautiful. Away In A Manger Frequently referred to as Luther's "Cradle Hymn." there is more such evidence that a colony of German Lutherans in Pennsylvania was responsible for its origin and wide popularity in this country. It was supposed to have

bee n taken to England a little later, where it is very popular today. Its success in America was no doubt aided by the association of the carol with a picture depicting Luther and his family at Christmas in a caroling buok. along with the fact that Luther was probably one of the must prolific of carol writers. Current thinking has it that the song was known in Pennsylvania by 1855 in English, leading naturally to a translation into the German since that language was commonly used in the church services. This viewpoint is backed up by the fact that, while it is used much in the United States and England, it is practically unknown in Germany. Had Luther written it. it would 1 certainly have been used by his people through the centuries along with his other songs. Although the carols writer is unknown, the most popular .musical setting seems to come to us from .J. It. Murray, ap- 1 proximately in 1887. Os the many charming manger carols and lullabies, this one is possibly the most beloved, and its beautiful flowing melody and appealing pictures in its text sug-

gest the rocking of a cradle. It is one of the purest lullaby carols, gentle in rhythm and quiet in tone. 1 Heurd Th<> Bells On Christmas l>ay The words of this song, written by the American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow just six months after the Battle of Gettysburg, are appropriate for our current times. The carol appeared Dec. 25, 1863. In it Longfellow has voiced the anxiety of millions of weary hearts m the country during the long dark years of the War Between the States. Longfellow nimseu had been very closely related to the horror of war his young son, a lieutenant in the Army of the Potomac, was seriously wounded in battle. The words "For hate is strong and mocks the song Os Peace On Earth, Goch! Will To Men" reflects the atmosphere of those dark days when our forefathers anxiously awaited the dawn of peace between North and South. They contain, however, at the same time the permanent longings of the human heart that continues to pray in every conflict. The poem waa first published
