Tuesday, November 3rd. Election Day
Tuesday, November 3. is election day. This is a very important day in the United States as this is a presidential election year. Despite what the voting machines and ballots say. it is a race tietween two men. President Lyndon Johnson atxi Barry Goldwater. This election also features in Indiana, the Governor's race anti a senate battle which has caused a lot of interest. Os couN^a, there are many more races,-st ate. state legislature and county offices are to - ' Thi^ presidential race is the “blV'qh^. rrrt/this is the race that pullß^hF Voters A lot is to be considered-itt this battle Fresit4dentMh>hnfipn came into office ttfollowing:the assasination of the late John F. One big item that enters in and simply is disgusting, is the racial situation. Tn a country that is supposed to be the - world power and oustanding in ex-erything. the complete lack of ability to get along with people ’ just because the color of the skin, seems stupid Os course, ,most of the hatred stems from "I years and years of segregated living in the South It has been very trying for these people to change all of a sudden, after being raised under these conditions. Another item that nters is the Medicare and So; lai Security factor. This has been a hotly debated question. The draft has been brought in<o the political campaigns. Scandals have sprung up in the talks along with many other items that are sure to swing some votes one way or the other. It is good that peop’e. consider these facts instead of just going to the polls and pulling a lever for a party. Regardless of w' v anvor.e may tell you all th^ g< ad candidates ■ are not on one ticket and all the bad ones on the other Also, many good men are running against good men or they wouldn't b’ where they are ? today. Politics is quite a rat ra e. and the smear campaigns are disgusting to people wh < ’aim to have a little ir - hyence and < urt sv about them If they don’t, are Hoy the people you want f It has been id nc y times that in a enuntrv of 190 million people it is to* 1 ’d c only these two me>- oc Tered to the public for elec’ion Whoever t

is elected president, their work will not be easy. This position is one of more importance and responsibility than actually should be put on one man's shoulders. Os course, any president has a much easier time if they have a Congress on their side. However, the balance of Congress can be as important as anything It isn't good to have a Congress that passes everything the president wants or to have one that rejects all his efforts The Congress is to represent the people of their area. Each congressman is put in by the people of a restricted area, statewide on the senate side and by districts of the state on the representative side. If they do their job properly and represent the people it is up to the people to help them by expressing their views. In Indiana, incumbent Vane e Hartke. is running for LiJ»* Hen31P SV3 t open against Russell Bontrager. This is a hotly contested race of much controversy as well Both of these men have been very controversial over ‘he years, and the race should be a dandy. In the local district, the Third Congressional District, incumbent John Brademas is opposed by Bob Miller. This also has raised a lot of spirit as the race for the House seat always carries additonal interest by the fact that this is the closest representative we have in Washington. Os course, the governor's battle Is always interesting In Indiana, it can never be a reelection. as the law states that a governor cannot succeed himself in Indiana. It assures the state of a new governor every four years. Dick Ristine and Roger Branigin are staging this battle. The county and state races other than this, many times are carried in on the shirt tails of the higher offices, but St Joseph County proved that the party lines can and are crossed if the people feel deeply er. mgh about the situation such as in the last county election The people must hunt the facts. Just how much can be learned by listening to the jingles. songs, speeches and children talking for the candidates on TV and radio, is debatable but fact hunting should be done before going to the polls It would be very encouraging to see every eligible voter turn out once and see what the people really want, but it is up to every one of us to make the judgment as complete as possible. Twelve hours are available for a voter to vote in Indiana and bv law an employer must give a person thr.e to vote if he so desires Very few people reallv have an excuse that is legitimate for not x- 'ii g *x plan now to vote on Tuesday and nlan hoxx- vou t > vote before you go Into the booth X little thought and planning may satisfy vou and heln everyone concerned on election day
the fact that people do not kr/nv when they enter the booth who they are going to cast their ballot for With the names and offices wntlen down on? can move right down the machine to make their selections This is possible as a complete list is offend on sample hallo's as well a p bU h<-d in th' panera Voting is a p- vdegr Am -ri< ane» have that many people of tht world dmt enjov hut don’t make it unpleasant for others bv ? lining a larg- amount of time in the voting booth.
