For as long as any citizen of Walkerton can remember, on Halloween our boys and girls have enjoyed donning fancitul attires and changing their usually pleas, ant miens into the scary appear, ances of spooks, goblins and witches. Throughout the United States, other young trick or treaters followed th* same tradition, year after year, since time immemorial. Phen, Just fifteen years ago, a new element was injected into the custom which dated back to the Druids and ancient Romans. On October 31. 1930. for the first time, a small group of Sunday school pupils in the suburb of a large American city, had the idea that they could do better than gather candy and apples for themselves Thcv sbontar ws’v decided that while they were doing their rounds, ringing doorbells and asking for treats. they might just as well collect pennies, n c’-. els and dimes to help other c’u’dren. less fortunate than themBelves, in distant narts » -» world. It caught on like wildfire, across all 50 states, and eventually wound un right in our midst here Walkerton. The nationwide 1963 UNICEF Halloween resulted in over $2,000 000 for needy children around the world In a saw days, our own boys and g'rls will again be among scene 3 5 million young Americans engage*! in this new. beneficent version of the old tradition in some 13 000 er mmurtti^ from coast to coast, and in Alaska and Hawaii. To what use will this money be put? To state it in simple, direct terms, it Will save ch 1drery» lives and ensure a better future for them in more than 100 countries. This will’w* accomplished by Vie United Nation”* Children’s Fund, the largest organisation entirety devoted to the wd. fare of children. This UNICEF is suonsored by the Mothndist Youth Fellowship, and will be held on Sunday evening.
