Watch out for school children* sußim kJ ill REV. ROBERT IL HARPER WHO DISCOVERED AMERICA? J MAY SEEM, in asking such a 1 question, to confess my own ignorance and to reflect upon your intelligence. Hut it is not quite as certain as that. For there is some reason to question the widespread belief that Christo* pher Columbus discovered America And this belief persists and little children will tell you that ‘ in fourteen hundred and ninety, two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Now there is no denying that Columbus did sail the ocean blue in 1492 and that he reached an outlying island of the New World. And that later he learned he had discovered a New World. But the question is — was he the first to discover the New World? Recently a spinning wheel was found on the northern shores of North America and there was speculation that the Vikings had left it there about a thousand years ago. It is traditional at least that Leif Ericson sailed the ocean blue approximately in the year 1000 A.D. and diaeovered Greenland and sailed along the northern coast of North America. Notwithstanding this and the old stone tower at Newport, Rhode Island, the belief persists that Columbus discovered America. Let us be thankful that our love for the United States does not depend upon its origin, but our love for our country depends upon what she is and what she is to be
