Shamrocks Remp To Fifth Win 34-0 As Howe Military Falls Saturday
North Liberty’s Shamrocks, with a very stout defense again turning in a very fine job, rolled to an easy win over Howe Military Academy Saturday afternoon on Howe’s field. The win was the fifth for Jack Lowe's team against one loss, and their fourth in a row after dropping the second game of the season to Jun town, - 14 First downs 1 298 Rushing yardage 37 73 Passing yardage 0 11 Passes attempted 6 6 Passes completed 0 1 Passes intercepted 0 0 Punts 4 0 Punting average 35 0 Fumbles lost S 60 Yards penalized 35 Added to the strong defense was a potent running attack that found the Shamrocks rushing for a total of 298 yards with another 73 in the air for a total of 271. Meanwhile, they were holding the Howe offense to a mere 37 on the ground and none in the air as six passes were attempted and none completed with one being intercepted by the alert Shamrock defense. Howe is winiess to rork defense. Howe is winless to date this year. Bolling Prairie Tops Indians 13-7 In Football Thriller Friday Night
Walkerton’s Indians dropped their fifth game of the season Friday night ns Rolling Prairie used two long runs from scrimmage to top the Indians 13-7 in a real football thriller. In this game, Walkerton gained yardage rather well, but was unable to sustain a drive, losing the ball to Rolling Prairie several times that could have easily won the ballgame for them. Their lone touchdown came on an intercepted lateral pass in the final quarter while on defense. Walkerton Statistic* R. On the second play after the first down, Al Zarr cut between tack I" and end and angled for the sidelines and ran the whole way for the score This was in the first quarter. This was just the beginning as they almost ran at will, combined with the fine passing of sophomore quarterback. Jim Hurt. Another first period score was achieved as Hurt moved the team down field late in the quarter with a 27 yard pass to Jackson and Clarence Fields' 20 yard run completing the drive. Both extra points were good and the Shamrocks led 14-0 by the end of th« quarter. North Liberty pushed across touchdowns in each of the last three quarters as well as Fields scored two more on runs of two and four yards. The other score came on a pass from Hurt to Ron Porter. The extra points were scored by Summerfield on a run; Shafer, run; Hurt, nin; and Porter on a pass from Hurt. Those breaks cost the Indians dearly as they had the opportunity to take charge of the game in the first half. Tommy Klineinst intercepted a pass in Rolling Prairie territory but the halftime came before the Indians could get a play underway. Th* second half hadn't been underway very long when Tom Wheatbrook broke loose in the very same pattern that had scored the fust TD for the Bulldogs and he went 57 yards for the score. This time the extra point was kicked by (Hen Swanson and the Bulldogs I<ml 13-0. The Indians continued to move the brill fairly well until in Bulldog territory, and twice they penetrated within the 25 yard line before looing the ball on downs once and a fumble once. In the last period, the Bulldogs again had the ball on the Walkerton 25 when a Bulldog back was hit for a loss and tried to lateral out of the situation Gary (’lark proved Johnny on the spot as he raced m to grab the lateral which almost looked as if it were intended for him. He raced 70 yards ahead of everyone for the Indians' Tl> This happened with 7:10 left in the game and Terry Lute then passed to Klinedinst for tire extra point. The Indians then tried a onesided kick and it was successful as they took over on their own 48 following a five yard penalty. Indian BTeam Hosts Greene Varsity Friday Walkerton's B team will host the Greene Twp. varsity in a game at the Walkerton park on Friday night. This will be an odd twist as the game will be Greene's first homecoming, despite the fact that it is held at Walkerton. Greene is in their first year of varsity football and have a 2-3 record to date playing a mixed schedule of varsity and B teams. The Indians will be hurting manpower wise for this game as the local team is now rather small due to several boys quitting and several minor injuries. The varsity has a game Saturday and only a very limited number of boys will he available for Friday night. Game time is 7:30 at Wakerton's park. P.T.A.ToSee Slides Os The Holy Land John Bing air in. I’. T. A. program chairman for Wakerton. announces that the gamzation has been fortunate r securing the films of the rccen’ trip taken by Mr. and Mrs. l.'onard Beaty. Mr. Beaty will show and narrate for the slides at th' regular meeting this Thursday, October 16. The meeting will be held at the high school this month in an effort to draw the parents of the high school students as well as “those of the grade school. In addition to the slides, there will be a brief talk by Mr. Keine, the guidance counsellor. Thore will be open house in the rooms. An executive meeting will be held in the library at 7 p.m . All committee chairmen are asked to attend by Mrs. Stasko, ITA president. Refreshments will be served by first and third grade mothers under the direction of Mrs Capes, hospitality chairman. There will b 0 a fdm room for the children with Mrs Phil Waldron handling the arrangements. Final arrangements will be discussed for PT A participation in the homecoming parade and festivities. Shamrocks Host North Judson At School Field An interesting football game should develop Thursday night at South Bend’s School Field as the North Liberty Shamrocks with a 5-1 record, meet a strong and fast North Judson team The Blue Jays have a returning backfield this year but a basically new line from their very successful team of last season. They feature a good scrambling quarterback in Jerry Risner and a speedy halfback, Bill Dolegal, who is one of the leading scorers in this area. Stopping their speed will be necessary to get win number six in this game. Halloween Party Plans Now ln v Progress Fhe Walkerton Chamber of Commerce n.et Thursday noon with a small crowd at Heil's dining room. Several matters of importance were discussed as the Chamber continues to strive to improve our town through their efforts. Plans for the Halloween party for the children of the community were discussed as the annual parade and judging of costumes will take place on Saturday. October 31. Richard Brice is general chairman and will contact all the cooperating organizations for the completing of plans. The committee which has been working all year on new* decorations for the Town, especially at Christmas, reported that decorations that have been considered would cost around SISOO. This would dress up the business area with use of colored lights already present It was not known if the financing could be worked out for this year or not, but they are moving ahead to acquire all the information possible. It is hoped that arrangements can still be made for this year. The committee on the homecoming float, headed by John Zenon and Mahlon Jacob, have added Newt Williams and Pear! Wooley to their list but expect to need additional help at the last minute. Denslow Doll and I^ee Welch were appointed to take charge of the large plastic sheet that will be utilized in the park this winter to hold water fo r a portable ice skating rink This will be ready for use of the people early this winter.
