It Is Everybody’s Job>

This week is Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention is everybody's job. It basically is not the job of the Fire Departments as their j >b is fighting fires. Preventing fires is your job and mine. The only aspect the fire departments, whether paid or volunteer, have to fire prevention, is in educating the public In this line. An interesting program was •“•given for the Walkerton Lions Chib recently at which time the faculties of Walkerton and Tyner were guests. Two members of the South Bend Fire •..Department presented the program which included showing a film of the “Our Lady of Angels ^School” fire in Chicago a few years ago. This might sound strange to most, but give it a little thought. D » you know how to escape from any point in the house d« spite where the fire could be? Give this some thought. Would you know what to do in case of fire, where to meet once you were out of the house so that a fatal trip back for someone else who isn't there could be avoided? Could you get out of your house if you couldn't see because of smoke'’ Could yon get from the second story if the stairs were on fire'’ This is the type question that impressed the group most and made them think. They stated that the sixth graders were more apt to listen and take heed to what they were saying than any other age group. They also carried these thoughts home and made the family more aware of firm safety and prevention through their lesson at school. Fire- can be pr vented but it takes the cooperat ve effort of everyone. Over 95 per cent of fires arc preventable through V'st a little precaution Smoking is a large cause of fires. So is faulty wiring. These and a few other main causes are very easy to avoid, but continually kdl more than 1000 persons a month in the United States. Fire prevention is not just a one week job. but a full time job for evervone But this is a natural week to start observing the rules, and remember, jt may just be the little trick that saves your possessions and your life.

Voice of the People Dear Local Merchant: (In reference to last week s letter to the editor) I am a local female shopper, , and I want to know: do you really want to know why everyone doesn't shop in Walkerton all the time'.’ Well, here is or.? opmiod tor what its' worth. I beg to disagree with s >me of the things you say 1 al merchants do for me. Too many merchants will i >t try to get a particular item if it is not in their stock. In fact, in one store I was 'stalled off for five weeks before I finally gave up aixl shopped elsewhere. The merchant kept telling me it would be in next week next week next week. It was easily found in a nearby town Personally. I would have valued the business of the. customer enough to have attempted to obtain the item in any way possible. If I could not do this, I would be truthful enough to admit I could not get the merchandise In another place of business, my husband wanted to buy a large priced item and he phoned the business man at least three times to ask to purchase the item and received no response. Finally my husband went to the store and had to ask to be waited upon. The excuse for not responding was “we don't need the money from these items t > stay in busin/ss " Yet this product was advertised as their business In the appliance line, a certain item was purchased and a higher price paid for the particular feature on it When installed, that particular feature did not work, the merchant was never able to fix it. and no part of the money was refunded No exchange of parts was offered In my observations, I find that sonx" of the local merchants who complain the most about |>eople shopping out of town are the least active in community organizations such as Chamber of Conferee and Lions Club And now f would like to give credit t<> th >se merchants who progress. your money. Their items are properly and attractively displayed, their store fronts are. presentable, the stores are well lit and are clear.' and attractive both inside and outside. These merchants outwardly appear to desire our business. I notice their stores are usually crowded and their business appears to be very good. We realize that sometimes th" local merchant has to charge more I nause he cannot rely <>:■ xolumc sales If this merchant gives good service. 1 belk ve it is well worth the extra cost Too many times people may get items through catalogs or out of town and then find thev cannot have it serviced or it is too inconvenient to be serviced! or that it is not returnable. I think it is a pleasure to shop locally at the stores that give good service. It is the intention of this letter to offer constructive criticism by using examples of my own per-
