heai come tile start of the fall ( lassie on Thursday St Lotus in the series against the Yanks” This they couldn't believe But it is as true as taxes and as han! to figure out as the tax form. Who would have given the Cardinals a chance two weeks prior to the end of the season with the Phillies .seemingly having it al! to themselves Even if something would have happened to the Phillies at that stage (which it did* there were the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants t • take into consideration. BUT THE CARDINALS CAME through just well enough to win It seemed like no team wanted it for awhile as the Cards had it
all wrapped up with three days to' go and three contests against the lowly M< ts However .a 1-0 shutout and a 15-5 drubbing left only tliv final win 11-5 over the Mets while Cincinnati was losing their last two to the apparently dead Phillies Yes. the last week was more exciting than a kiddies penny scramble on the Fourth of July THE CARDS WILL. EVEN though a winner in the American Ix’agrie by only a game and a team wha was chasetl to the wire, still figured to be the team to beat when they were in third As for the Yanks, they are still the Yanks and that is enough said there With such pros a Whitey Ford directing then pitching and doing a good job of it hunsclf. and the real pro. Mickey Mantle in the lineup, they are always tough Last year the Yanks were stale when the senes rolled around as they had the penEjant several weeks m advam • This year it took a rush towards the end of the season and when the pressure is the greatest, .so are the Yanks THE SERIES STARTS ON Wedwsday in St Loins and after two games goes to the Stadium in New York It should be a great set with the Cards’ ace in the hole being Ken Boyer and Mantle still the niain.-“pnng in the Yankee camp This senes wih pit two great fielding third basemen. both Boyers.
