Time To Plan For 1965-1966
Looking over the figures of enrollment for the Polk-Lincoln-Johnson School Corporation, one can see. that this school area is growing each year. After close surveying of the figures, another old subject which should be new in the minds of the people of this school area conies up. That is the possibility of housing the high school in one building. the real purpose of the school reorganization program when started several years ago. It only stands to reason that should the high school classes, at least the upper three, be combined in one building, a much more complete curriculum oould he offered. The two school’s upper four grades, make a combined enrollment of 121 students, whi'h would make a larger and broader faculty necessaiy for the stu b its. Then sortie of the subjects that are desired by a few at present copld he offered. The two depts intirested f' >m which to set up these class s. The problem of transporting students for a situation like this, is one that always makes 5*4110 enemies. Probably not one school district in the state that went into transportation of students to combine high schools prior to building of a new school, did not have some irate parents because their children had to ride a bus or leave the school that they had attended for several years. This may be hard to take personal’y. but the benefits offered to the student are many,

and with the necessary work needed to enter college these days, it is strictly for the student’s benefit. Setting up such a transportation would take a little effort and a considerable amount of money in extra transportation costs. However, with careful planning, the costs of other schools hasn’t been outi-ageous and shouldn't be in the case of Wa’kerton and Tyner, being only approximately six miles. With the buildings available, it would seem that possibly the freshman class would have to be considered in the same building with the Junior High as adequate classroom space is not immediately available in either building. However, this would meet with appro'al from the necessary parties as the freshmen subjects aren’t usually selective for the students. The object of this extensive reorganization program which really shook up the school systems of the state the past few years, is designed to make a better education possible for the students. In considering this, all petty jealousies must be forgotten and the welfare of the boy and girl as students preparing for college or some other school, or just to enter life at this point, must be remembered. Let’s hope it will be possible for the newly elected board to make plans along this line by the start of the 1965-66 school year and hope also that the public will approve to the fullest extent.
