Leonard Beaty returned recently from a thirtyone day tour of the Holy Lands with a paity of fifteen people, conducted by Dr. Weber, Professor of Bible at Indiana Central College in Indianapolis. All wete* from.lndiana, but two, and most of them weru E. U. B.'a, so they had mqeh in common from the start. Wo left New York for Rome at 9:30 p in. on a Pan-Am. jet and the sunrise over the Atlantic was beautiful. From Rome, we left at once by plane for Istanbul, Turkey. where they had their first experience with foreign traffic and bus drivers with “courage." The view frori the Hilton Hotel across the Bosphorus toward Asia at night was delightful, and the Blue Mosque, St. Sophia and ancient walls, were magnificent. From here we traveled by Turkish plane to Tel Aviv, a bury city <>n, the Mediterranean coast of Israel, and then on to Nazareth for eeveral days. From this quaint little city, which is much

as it was in Jesus' time with its narrow, crooked and crowded market streets and famous sacred buildings, they spent several days going out to placed such as the beautiful Sea of Galilee, and City of Tiberias, Capernaum. Cana. Miggido, Mount ot Beaut Hudes. Sermon on the Mount, etc. In Jemsalem, Israel, we saw the Room of the Last Supper, King David's and Herod's tombs, etc. On Sunday evening, we were entertained in the h< r.v of an American YMCA WbrMef, and enjoyed some real American coffee. The young couple were former student of Dr Weber, ami a sister from South Bend was happy to see some folks fwir back home. The next day we passed thru the "Mandelbaum Gate" and No Man’ Land into Jerusalem, Jordan Here we stayer! for nearly a week nt A! Ummah College with Dr. and Mrs. Haramy proving themselves to be veiy dear and wonderful hostr Trip from here included the Garden of Gethsemane, the Temple Area. Jordan River, and Dead Sea, so salty and bitter and so far below sea level, proved to be
rather undesirable for swimming. Ihe Garden, Tumb oi Jesus and Calvary wire very natural and less commercialized than most places which seemed to make them more .-acred. The group walked the street where Jesus rode tr it:, rphantlv into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. 1! is still narrow, rather steep and c >bble stone or rocky under foot, making it rather difficult o walk. W. also walked the Way of the Cross, stopping at most of the fourteen stations along the way. Jerusalem, the divided city, part Israel and part Jordan, with three great religions still faithfully observed, and the many sacred spots visited, really took one back to Bible times However, the barb*d wire fences, pickets behind and bags in windows, and No Mans Land, show the intense hatred of these people for each other, and as you look at the black topped chinch hin t over the spot where Jesus sat and wept over Jerusalem, one wonders how ho would feel today. Israel ir not ri < ognized in any of its neighooring countries, and one had to be careful not to mention it. Perhaps it is this condition that makes both countries so intensely patriotic and hard working for their countries. Both are advancing agriculturally and economically quite rapidly at present. Before leaving Jordan, Mr. Beaty and five other members of the party, took side trip* to Petra, over 200 miles from JerusaJerm. where they saw ruins of an ancient trade, center built by the Romans, in a narrow mountain pass. The scenery was wonderful and hundreds of camels were seen on this trip. Next we flew to Beu rut. a beautiful modern city on the Mediterranean. ami the swimming was good there. Then by bus to Damascus, Syria, where we walked the Street called Straight, saw where Paul was let down over the wall, and the House* of Annias where he received his sight after hi * conversion. Also, the beautiful Mosque of Omayad and the Mausoleum of Saladin where the head of John the Baptist was buried, were visited, and a factory where damasks, silks. copper ware and beautiful mosaic furniture were being made. Mother of I pearl was used extensively in their mosaics as we’l as for jewelry. Os course, everyone shopped for some of the famous work to take home. Many other interesting places in this region of the Holv Lands were visited as Bethany. Bethlehem. Jericho, Mt. Nebo, and a.
