N. L Summer Recreation Program The shuffleboard tourney ended with Shane Hostetler beating Kevin Hunt in the Cub division. Kevin Hostetler downing Dennie O'Connor in the Midgets, and Jim Fraser defeating Phil I.appin Ln the Cadets. Terry Hamilton defeated Marsha Lee for the girls championship. The Celtics were the giant killers in the basketball league tourney. They beat the league winning Hawks 41-34 Tuesday, then downed me second place Lakers 40 to 35 to take the tourney. The Celts' victory over the Hawks showed the result of balanced scoring as Joe Fisher and Dennie Clark got 14 and 11 points, while the three other Celts were scoring. Bill Albert con-t-ibuted 22 scores for the losers. The tLakers moved to the finals by ousting the Pistons 40 to 15. Again ail five starters scored from 6 to 12 points. had 12. Kent Arnsbarger and Bob Lappin came up with 8 apiece, and Chris Anderson and Bruce Franklin each got six. The Pistons got 6 and 5 point performances from Greg Groves and Barry Hughes. The championship game saw a short handed Laker squad put up a good fight before going down in defeat to the Celts 40 to 35. Mike Newcomer led the Celts with 16, followed by Dennie Clark s 10 and Joe Fisher's 8 points. Chris Anderson was game high scorer with 23 for the losers and Bob Lappin added 12. A reminder that All Star games will be played Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of this week. In the junior baseball major league, the A's tied the White Sox for second place by beating them in a 17-14 marathon. The A s showed a mass of hitting power as Mike Newcomer hit a pair of homers and Kevin Hostetler hit for the circuit with bases loaded. John Zook and Shelley Patinella had doubles for the A s. Os the 8 hits gathered by the A’s. five of them were for extra bases. The Sox had only three hits, but they worked the A’s pitching staff for 14 walks. Timely doubles by Kenny Ross and Kent Arnsbarger helped keep the score close. Newcomer has had four homers and Hostetler two. On Tuesday, the league champion Twins had five hits, nine walks and five errors to down the Phillies 13 to 12 in 3 innings. Chris Anderson had 2 hits for the Twins while Bill Dove was getting the only hit off Ricky Luke. The tie for second place was broken when the White Sox whipped the A's 5 to 3 in their second meeting of the week The A’s were under control until Joe Fisher ran out of eligible innings to pitch. Fisher had blanked the Sox in three innings and the Athletics held a 3-0 lead. The other A’s pitchers could not find the plate, and this fault, phis a couple of costly errors, enabled the Sox to st ore five runs in the last of the sth Kevin Hostetler had two safeties for the winners and Kenny Ross, Kent Arnsbarger and Bill Albert got the three hits for the Sox. Three games were scheduled for August 3, 4 and sth. The AllStar series had to be changed to one game which has been scheduled for August 12. They lost 3-0 to undefeated New Carlisle as Brown threw his third no-hitter of the season. Jack Jackson and Dennis Fannin pitched well, but had poor support and all three runs were unearned. Dennis Fannin shut out Madison on one hit. The Shamrocks had 1 run and 2 hits. Bob Cain and Ron Peterson each had a single. Fannin struck out 12 men. Ron Peterson ended the season with the highest batting average for tho regulars with 11 hits in 29 times at bat for an average of .379. He was the only hitter with an average of over .234). He also had at least one hit in every game except in two games against New Carlisle. John Fannin was the second leading hitter. August 12. the recreation program wishes to invite the boys and girls to attend Park Day from 1:00 until about 4:00. Races and contests will be scheduled with prizes for the first three places. Age limits are from 16 with groupings of 6,7 and 8: 9, 10, and 11; 12 and 13; and 14 to 16. Ages will be determined from January 1. 1964. Wednesday night the major league All Star Teams will play a 7inning game immediately following the presentation of awards to the league winning Twins and for physical fitness accomplishments. This game will complete the 1964 summer recreation program. Mr. Ridenour would like to thank everyone who participated and helped this summer. The puppies won the summer league.
