4th Draws Large Crowd In Walkerton “The largest crowd in years” was the comment of the people who have attended the Ith celebrations in Walkerton over the last several years, as a crowd estimated at over 10.000 jammed into the park and school lawn area Saturday night to watch the conclusion of the day’s activities and the giant fireworks display. With a program beginning at noon, plenty of activity was available all day for the people as they attended the program at the park with the balloon ascension and fireworks again the largest attractions. The balloon ascension was delayed until about 7:45 as the wind was a little strong and the crew of Claude Schafer of Indianapolis waited until more suitable conditions prevailed. The ■ giant balloon of hot air soared ■ high and traveled south with ■ the parachutist coming down I about two miles from the park । and the balloon remained aloft much longer, riding the breeze south of Koontz Lake before descending back to earth. . The fireworks began at 10:00 I p.m. with the large crowd en- । joying the show and all the activities which included kiddie contests, ball games, a band concert and always the midway and eating stands. The help of the police department and Civil Defense police was greatly appreciated by the committee in charge as they did an excellent job of handling the large amount of traffic. The Fourth program as usual, was sponsored through the combined efforts of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion and the Lions Club. The committee has already laid the basic plans for next year as the annual program is planned well in advance, giving all a day of fun and entertainment on the holiday. i NOTICE Dr. Lee Smith’s office will be eflosed from August 1, 1964, to July 1, 1965.
