NEXT ffUESDAY IS All, Star game for the Major Leagues and the so-called “Dream Game” will again open the door for the arguments between the National League fans and the American League fans. But what does an All Star game tell you? It is one game, not a lung haul, and .‘-imply tells what happens on a given day. But regardless of what it proves, it is a chance to see the super stars of today's game all together in one Conte4. SI Nt I? agers, Walter Alston of the World Chan^pion Dodgers and Al Ijopez, moved in to the spot due to the moving up of manager Ralph Houk to general manager after last year’s series, both took the easy way out in selecting the alternates. They went a’ >ng with the second choices at the various position-i and neither pitching staff has yet been named. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME criticism given when the alternates are chosen and surely some for the use of the players once the mandatory three innings of action are over. This is human and if any manager knew before the game what he dot after, he surely would be manager each year as he would have nothing but a winner. Personally, the managers show a little cowardnes- when they strictly select the second choices as probably every one has omitted some player or players that they personally would like to have on the team. Also to be taken into consideiation. is the fa>ct that every team must have one representative on the teams, 'this leaving a little problem sometimes in the selection. THE ALL STAR GAME W]LL Z be played in the Mets new stadium and ju t mentioning the name Mots lets everyone know that anything can happen. is outdrawing almost every team in baseball and supports at this time, the game's most loyal fans. This is a real b<x>n to ba eball, but the record of 22 and 53 at this time isn’t. However, the Mets are oalorful and the beautiful now stadium is an appropriate spot right next t'» the World's Fair for the All Star game. Looking briefly at the two leagues and how they stand, Baltimore must now be taken as a serious contender by those who didn't do this earlier. The Orioles are playing very good ball and leading the American League by 4' a games at the time of this writing. The Yanks, with their complete dominance over the White Sox. moved up fa t, but had a brief set back at the hands of the Orioles after dumping the Sox ten straight times. The Sox still remain only 6 out. but from here on down through eighth place ; t i 5 almost anyone's race as five teams are only four games apart. THE NATIONAL LEAGUE has found the Giants back on top a i they just came off a four game sweep over the Dodgerrand the Phillies were having just a little diffculty themselves. The Phllliex however, trail by only percentage points. Then there is a d >p to the next seven teams which are only’ five games apart as the middle of the National league i - closer than the proverbial sardines in a can. TH E CLOSE N E S S AND thrilling baseball in the two leagues will make for greater excitement than when one team runs away with things like the ea'-’e has so often been, especially in the American League. The All Star break is the mythical half way point in the season when all but the two teams get a break in the schedule to get ready for the torrid second half drives. Red Sox Split Two League Contests The Walkerton Red Sox won a ckee 2-1 decision in league play last Thursday and dropped a 5-1

decision in a wi’d and wooly game Monday night. This leaves the Red Sox with a 2-3 league record to date. Also played wa< a home game Sunday night which was lost 9-1 t >- the Lucky Cigar team of LaPorte. The Red Sox received very' good pitching and support from Codge Harness Thuroday to dump Eleanor’s Pizza. Four errors gave the Red Sox their nins as they were all made in the firH inning. After one out. Jerry Rains, Bob Northam and Bob Urbin, all were safe on ground ball errors and after a strikeout, Don Ludwig lifted a routine fly to left field that was dropped for the two runs. From here on out, the Mishawaka team played good ball but couldn’t push across more than the one run against Harness. that coming in the third inning. । Monday night a wild contest saw Walkerton spot the Downtown Merchants four runs in the first inning on five hits and two walks, then settle down to make the battle < lo«<> as they. dropped a 5-1 decision. Harness was again the pitcher and Sonny Cripe had a home run for the losers. The Red Sox threatened in the seventh inning, as Chuck Fujawa and Ronnie Hummer walked to open the inning. After a harl ground smash was turned into a double play’, Urbin walked and Singleton singled home the Red Sox third run. An over throw at third on this fgay brought the second run home and only a questionable play’ by’ the Downtowners’ third baeman ended the rally on another hard hit grounder. Sunday it was too much .LaPorte in a 9 inning game as the
