JIM Bl ’NNING 'S I ’ERFECT game Sunday was another one of the great minutes in sports. To pitch a game of baseball today without letting a man get to first base is probably more impressive tlwn it was 12 years ago when the iast such game was pitched in regular league play. Today it is difficult, for a startei to get to finis^a jame in many instances as the emphasis is on the relief pitcher and many time in the course of a shut out game, you can find a manager pulling a pitcher to get a fresh man in fm a certain hitter or after a combi-

nation of two men getting on base either by walks or hits. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT everything in the past thirty years has been taken from the pitching, and to watch some of the games on TV. even th nigh this angle is deceiving, the strike zone looks pretty small. Balls are used at the .slightest excuse as they won't let a pitcher throw a ball with a little nick or cut in it. A black spot also puts a ball out of play, and of course, spitballs and other so called trick pitches are out.

BUT SUNDAY. BUNNING was not to be denied. He has always had a world of stuff and can move a ball very good along with a good fast ball. Jim's trouble has usually stemmed from the fact that he hail t< > good of control. This also was the case of some other good pitchers, Robin Roberts for example, in his banner days in the National League. A pitcher of this type gives up a lot of home runs and Bunning has led the American League pitchers in this department on a couple of times. The batters really like to dig in against the e pitchers ami swing for the long ball. However. Bunning also has always been a good strikeout pitcher and he whiffed ten of the Mets m his masterpiece Sunday. Bunning has an impressive 7-2 record this year and a low earned run average. And all the success that comes to him is well deserved. A RECORD WAS SET MONday night also in Chicago as the New Yoik Yankees put one in the book-; that certainly doesn't cheer up the White Sox fans. By winning their tenth game in a row over the S- >x Monday night, the Yankees have the distinction of cinching a season series by June 22. This has never been done before and probably will never be done again. The Yankees, now in first by a whisker, can thank the Sox and Cleveland for this .spot as neither of these two teams have y< ‘ won a game from the Bronx Bombers this season. Os course, the schedule helps in this record as it is a little unusual that a team has played another more than half of their games just a little over two months into the season. WATCHING THE YANKS ON i the tube also makes one want to talk a little about a great star. . this being Mickey Mantie. Mantle has had a tremendous career and it isn't over by any means, but ' some would wonder why not. The husky Oklahoma star has such l bad legs that it is very not iceable when you watch him play. Mantle • has had trouble with his legs i his entire career and they aren t getting any better. Vet he continues to go out there and give it his all despite the obvious trouble ne has with his peg* His record as a player might be much more impressive if the legs coulu give him better support. THE YANKS. ALTHOUGH not running away with the league, seems to be settling down to the job at hand, that winning the American league flag again. They have started playing better ball, but aren't pounding the ball with tie old Yankee power, but injuries and a couple of disappointing seasons by a couple of their players are responsible for this. However, they have been getting good pitching and just enough defense and hitting to ^ive all the teams a battle. It could be disasterous if they should again start really jvmnding the ball, that is for the rest of the league. » Kiddies' Day will he Friday, July 3rd 1:90 - 5:00 I’.M. instead of Sat. as usual FREE BICYCLE to be gi\en away al 5:00 P.M.
