tie Saturday when only one car is on the track at a time and going this short ten mile distance, brings out the best in the drivers. THE MANY VARIETIES OF cars will have more effect in the race over the longer haul than in the time trials, but speeds will have to be fast this year to make tlie race unless weather conditions hit to hold the lead-footed drivers to a slightly slower and considerably safer pace. PARNELL! JONES THE DEfending champion of the Indianapolis 500. has demonstrated m practice that his conventional Offy is still a good car with him behind the wheel. He has toured the track a couple of times at speeds over 156 miles per hour. speed and you can be sure that । such as’ A. J. Foyt, Roger Ward, 1 Jim Hurtibise and several others will be after that pole position also. Many figure that it will be about an eight man fight Saturday to set on the pole. IN ALL. ABOUT 60 CARS are waiting the time trials. Several never even get in line as slight mechanical difficulties hold them, back while others sometimes end up without drivers. Another very disappointing thing is for those who wait for the better weather usually later in the days and then wind up on the final day trying to get into line to qualify. A lot of drama can unfold in a very short time in the qualifeiationa. especially towards the latter part when the bumping starts and drivers are beginning to change from a bumped car into another vehicle to get in the race. WITH THE RACE JUST TWO weeks away from this Saturday, much interest is growing in the garage area as this year will be a real test for the Offy s. A number of rear-engine cars, including some with Offy engines in them, have entered the race. Also an improved tire and the use of gasoline m some of the cars plus tetter balance with the newer designs, has cut down the pit stops that many < ars are making and will leave more time to running rather than the pit stops that can be very harmful to a driver. ANOTHER GREAT RACE IS expected this year with the leading drivers from not only the United States, but from several other countries getting in the act
