Hearing Is Not A Gripe Session
The hearing at North la crtys High School Gym on Thursday, May 7. will be of utmost importance to everyone of this area. Fnis is the time some serious talk will be given omerning the condition of Indiana Mate Ko . i 2.; u; I the improvement scheduled to be considered. This comes after years and years of waiting, asking and dismission on this highway which is an important artery to the southwest corner of St Joseph County. Indiana 23 was completed in the late 1920 s and ever since, the only tiling that has been lone is some patch work on cracks, chuckh des. and over a couple of low marsh areas. A hearing a couple of years ago at the Courthouse was attendisi by Commissioner David Cohen. but nothing resulted from this other than the action being put on the agenda for the longrange plan through 1965 Now it looks like it will actually result in some work. The hearing is a ne essary meeting in order for the matching F<*deral dollcis to be put into this project that is estimated at SI,OOO Oo At the hearing, to which the pu lie is invited. statement -of econ >mic effect are to be given regarding the general improvement plans This is where the j übhc is duty bound to appear. It is hoped that all the various organizations concerning business, industry and retail merchants, will have a representative to speak for the group. This is not a gripe session for the public and this type of approach will do nothing to benefit anyone. The .spokesmen are to discuss briefly the reasons for an approval of the project and not to complain about the fact that the work is long overdue. Each represented body is to be extended the chance to speak, but as far as
A Lot At Stake In Primary
Tuesday's Primary Election, an important one lor all residents of the Polk-Lincoln-John-son School Corporation area, will select the new school board for this school distinct as well as choose the candidates fur the fall election on a county, state and national basis. Many people pass a Primary Election tor a couple of reasons, one being that they just aren’t Unit interested in the election, and . erund, because one has to declare Uieu' political faiUi al this time. This puts a dual electi >n on the slate for this area as Uie school board elc tion will be non-politi<al, but dill to vote one mus' get inside the machine and pull the lever to regidei their vote. The s hool board will re as an important vote as any cast at this tune as the board seie ted will have heavy re>|Kmsibihties for the next two and four years, dependng on the terms elected to by the public. School reorganization is forcing some issue for this board to consider that haven't eotne up foi a long tunc It will be in the forweable future that this area will have to build and building a school iw. t a minor item Running a school is big business ami the decisions made can very .strongly effe't every taxpayer in this area as well as parents of those with children in school now and in the future. It is everyone* duty as a citizen to vote, and <-speciall> those who complain the mo t. The good conduct of the put he is hoped fur as it will not benefit anyone to u; pear and make a fool of themselves v ith unpleasant talk. A good and ,en-tlr-sia-stH turnout of people will also make a solid impression at this time. The meeting, set for 2 00 p m . will be under the direction of Chief Hearing Oihcei Oral S. Craig, from the Planning Division of the Indiana State Highway Commission. The work now un ler consideration will begin at the Walkerton City Limits and continue through North Liberty to a point that will join with the western on 1 of the I’ eland Hoad improvement. which is scheduled to take place tin- year. It will also be very’ near the proposed By-Pass of South Bend which has one segment completed, with work s- hedvled to begin again on this • • the i c t ture. Included in the work will be the widening from 20 to 21 foot as well as relocating portions of the road to take some of the hazardous curve , from the road. The plan also calls for 11 foot wide berms on ea h side to make the highway much more modem. It Is hoped that construction planning and work can begin after the necessary right-of-wayr have been acquired for the changing of the curves. Thirty some years is a long time to wait for something like this, so it is your duty and concern to plan now to attend this meeting Your appearance will mean more than you may realize, even though you are not a speaker on the subject.
many simply do not exercise this privilege, especially at primary election time. Picking canaiuates from the County ranks in a primary isn’t the easiest, but it still Is the only way a person can choose the one they want. A little study and time can find out a considei atle amount about the candidates in a county such as St. Joseph, which is about the only way they can be thinned down. Another interesting phase will come up. that the ra e listed under president of the United States N-tween Gov Wallace, of Alabama, and Gov. Welsh of Indiana. Do n 4 misunderstand Governor Welsh's name on the ballot, he is n t running for pre i lent himself, but is the favorite son candidate to list on the ballot in regards to collecting votes to pass the support on to President Johnson at the coming Democratic Convention. Gov. Wallace, the man who was so mixes! up in the middle of the Civil Rights squabble in Alabama. Is running on a platform of one plank, that being against the present administraton’s Civil Rights Bill His a]> pearance Ln the Wisconsin primarv found him collecting over a quarter of a million votes going against a favorite son.
