Name Honor Students At Walkerton H. S. Sylvester E. Amsler, principal of the Walkerton High S hool, released Monday the names of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the class of 1964. 'j... Mary Ann Stepro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stepro, Route 1, Walkerton, has gained top honors of her class of fortyfour members. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, on the school newspaper staff for three years, junior class treasurer, reporter during her senior year and paticipated in the Geometry Achievement Contest her sophomore year. W & Sharon Kay Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Smith. Route 3. Walkerton, will be the eahitatonan for her class. Sharon has been very active in extracurricular activities, having been a member of the National honor society for three years: GA A four years; new?*paper staff four yr - : E. O Snethen contest two years: junior play; senior play: countv and local DAP. Good Citizen, senior year; Americanism Contest senior year; and a member of the Youth Look at Communism Panel sponsored by WSBT TV. Smelt Fry Saturday At North Liberty All the Snuit you can eat is the order of the day at the North Liberty Masonic Smelt Fry Saturday evening at the Masonic Temple in North Liberty. Serving will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. with only a donation being collected at the door. Tills annual Smelt Fry has a unique twist as a number of the Masons travel to the northern part of Michigan and catch the smelt fresh a day or two before the fry. The fishermen are at work now getting things ready for you and expect to see you Saturday night at their dinner. The public is invited. Blood Needed For A. L. Adams Albert L. Adams, a lifetime resident of North Liberty and this area, has been critically ill for some time now, and is in desperate need of blood. In the fight for his life in Memorial Hospital, he has already used over 30 pints of blood and a plea is going out for blood to replace this which he needed. Any Individual or groups who would like to aid this cause and can donate blood, should report to the blood bank in South Bend at the corner of Main and Navarre Streets. It is preferred that arrangements be made by phoning the blood bank in advance of going. The phone number is CE 4-1157, and any donations will be greatly apbreciated by the family and friends. Injured In 2 Car Accident Friday Eric Boklund, of 408 Montrose Ave.. LaPorte, was injured Friday evening in a two car accident or state Road 104 one mile northwest of Walkerton The accident occured when Boklund’s car was being passed by one driven by Paul Zukas, Walkerton, and the cars locked bumpers causing the Boklund car to roll over. The Zukas auto then came to rest on top of the Boklund car. Boklund was treated at the Walkerton Medical Clinic and then taken to the hospital in LaPorte He suffered from «alp and shoulder lacerations. Zuka was ticketed for improper passing. Indiana State Police and Walkerton Police investigated the accident. Industrial Park Has 13 Acres Ready To Occupy The Walkerton Industrial Fund Committee, presently working on abstracts, plats, deeds and other legal angles at the Industrial Park, has completed clearing and moving dirt on 13 acres of the park in preparation for building. An announcement will be forthcoming on the future progress made at the site. Last Thursday, the Engineering Construction Company of Logansport, Ind., completed a considerable amount of earth moving that had been in progress for almost a week. The Park, which is now incorporated within the city limits of Walkerton, is being readied for utility extensions and a road is planned to be laid to service the 13 acres that have been made ready. All of this work has taken much time and a considerable amount of money’ of the group that is presently serving as the board of directors, but is something that is necessary’ for building of additional industry fn the area. The committee has’nt completed their fond drive to date, but will be contacting those who have either promised to donate or those who haven't yet been contacted by one of the six on the committee. Your donations are an interest in the community in an effort to expand industry and create more jobs in Walk* erton. .Any member of the committee would be glad to explain any part of the program with you and take your donation. A goal of SIO,OOO hasn’t reached the three-quarter mark, but must be reached to keep the progress of the Industrial Fund Committee moving in the direction all have wanted for so many years. Chamber To Hold Special Meeting Thursday, April 30 The Walkerton Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday. April 30, since the breaking of the story about the hearing on State Road 23. This meeting will inform the group of the job to be done by the people of Walkerton and what is expected at the hearing A couple of other items of business will also be discussed at this time, but the highway topic will be the main feature. It is hoped that the State Highway Commission will have a representative present at this time to speak to the group as well in preparation to the coming hearing and further explain the plans that are to be discussed Lunch will begin at 12:00 noon in Heil's Dining Room and reservations should be made with president Bob Urbin or secretary Erroll Van Buskirk Plan to attend this meeting if at all possible and then plan for the following week to be present at the hearing set for North IJberty on May 7 State Road 104 Closed Two Days State Road 104 will be closed Thursday and Friday of this week for repairs on railroad crossings _of Walkerton-
Engaged if Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Baughman of North Liberty announce the engagement of their daughter. Joyce Ann, to Mark Hostetler. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hostetler of North Liberty. Miss Smith has attended Ball State Teachers College. Mr Raggles is a graduate of Purdue University and is now teaching in Elkhart. No dale has been set for the wedding. N. L. Lions To * Collect Items For Sale The North liberty Lions will call on residents living between State Road 23 and Oak Road, north of State Road 4 for items to he auctioned at the Lions Auction Sale to be held May 23. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Scholarship Fund The Lions Club will hold their monthly directors meeting Monday, April 27th. at Mary Kay’s Restaurant. Ladies Night will be May 11. The di.cussions will involve the widening of the present 20 foot surface to 24 feet with the incorporation of 11 foot wide shoulders throughout the rural areas. Also involved will be a complete new construction for 0.65 mile of the routing in order to implement the necessary horizontal curve corrections. The Hearing will be conducted by Mr. Oral S. Craig, Chief Hearing Officer from the Planning Division of the Indiana State Highway Commission. The public is invited to appear at this Hearing and to make economic effe<' statements regarding the proposed general improvement plan* The route section tc be discussed will extend from a point 0 19 mile north of US 6 in Walkerton, northeasterly for 5.37 miles to about 0 2 mile south of SR 4 in North Liberty. Proceeding from SR 4 in a north and northeast direction for an additional 10 018 miles, the proposal terminate- tn the present junction Qi SR 23 with SR 123. The point of termination is about 15 miles south of the proposed US 20 bypass of South Bend. It is also the west terminus of the East-West Ireland Road earmarked for improvement by St. Joseph County Commissioners A Highway spokesman indicated today that the SR 23 project, estimated at a cost of near $1,000,000, has been e : i'li*hed in the Com:: -sion’s current 19631965 biennial program f '■ completion of all preliminary engineering with actual construction to start B 3 soon as the needed nght-of-Uay had been acquired. Jt was further stated that a ascription of the US 20 bypass route from about Locust Road eastward to US 31 would be given to the public on the occasion of the Hearing.
