Lions And Guests Enjoy Jim Powers; Arce Wins Award The Walkerton Lions Club and their guests, which in, lud*d the 1963-64 basketball team of Wilkerton High School, completely enjoyed the talk given bv South Bend Central’s coach, Jim Powers, Tuesday at the annual basketball night Coach Powers, who has one of the more respected coaching jobs in Indiana, stressed four factions of the game, the players, the coach, the referees, and the fans in his talk that was both very interesting and informative. Tolling of the duties of a coach and a player, Powers brought out several strong points, including the duties of a coach which far exceed putting a team on the basketball floor. He mentioned that every boy who has participated in athletics remembers his coaches, where the same Individuals do forget teachers and friends of the same time in their lives. Each coach gives to each boy something to remember and is instrumental in their lives as they grow older He also stated that < oa< hing is not an easy job A coach is in the limelight all the time and his decisions and actions are remembered by many as ho directs his team Respect is due a coach, whether he is coa<'hing in a big school or small Respect of the fans as well as . the players is necessary to make his job a success This means much to the coach as well as an I individual. Concerning the plaver. he stressed several things. One is school work. This Is important. Good students and good basketball go hand in hand Desire was another necessary asset A player must have the desire and be willing to “put out" to produce the best results. Even in defeat, if the knowledge of this effort is there, it makes the game worthwhile just knowing that the best was given in the cause Pride is important to a player. He must have pride in his school and his team. To each player the team ami school ho represents should b»> in his mind the best m the country. The relationship between son and parents is important Each has to make their own sacrifices when a bov Is actively engaged tn sports. The coop<-raton of each i.^ necessary and must be present. Tying these together, the boy must realize he Is representing his school and team both on the floor ami off as the example he sets will ho remembered by the public through this image. Carins Arce, a senior member of the team, was presented the Lions Club Award for 1964 at this meeting This annual awanl Is one of the highlights of the March meeting and is particularlv important to the bov who is »o honored Harold Rizek i winner of the award in 1953 m ide the presentation to Carlos explaining what the award stand for and the seven factors lete-minmg the recipient < f the mnui! award whi< h is made in the form of a trophy.
