N. L. Summer Recreation Program Basketball A 41 to 39 victory over the Celtics gave the Pistons a first place tie. Barry Hughes and Jun Fraser scored 14 points each tor the winners while Steve Mlekodaj gathered 17 tor the Celts. The Pistons outscored the Celts 20 to 9 in the fourth quarter. The second game on Tuesday saw the Inkers winning from the Hawks 40 to 32. Karry Kane and Dana Housley got 14 and 13 points respectively for the Lakers as Harold Palmer dropped through 17 for the losers. On Thursday the Celtics and । the Pistons both won. This put the two teams in a first place tie at the end of the season schedule. The Celts downed the Lakers by the most lopsided score of the year 40 to 4. Bob Knecht led the Celts with 12 points. The Pistons had a much tougher time in downing the Hawks 41 to 38. A two point third quarter was the Hawks’ downfall. Ricky Moon had 17 points for the Hawks while । Gail Ross bombed the nets for 22. The Celtics got revenge Monday by whipping the Pistons in the play-off game 40 to 25. Mlekodaj again was the big scorer with 16. Fraser scored 11 for the Pistons. Mlekodaj got scoring help from Kent Rininger with 12 and Mike Summerfield with 10 points. The A s bombed the Sox for 12 runs In the third in trouncing their opponents 14 to 4. Mike Summerfied, Mike Clingenpeel and Gail floss each had 2 hits in the big inning. Ross and Joe Ginzel had two hits for the losers. 11 The Angels prevented a threeway tie for first by dumping the Twins 4 to 1 in the last game of the regular schedule. The victory enabled the Angels to take home all the marbles for this year. The Twins tried to get something started in the fifth, but were shut out in the inning leaving three men standing. Athletics 3 9 Lit I Ie League Series In the only game played in the four team series, the Angels did it again. This time they beat thi Twins 3 to 2 in six innings. Tin winning run was forced in by a walk to Dennis Clark with 2 outs in the sixth. Jim Fraser, Ralph Bell, Kevin Hostetler ami Greg Groves had singles for the Twins. Bruce Summerfied. Drew Bergland and Dana Sousley collected one hit each for the Angels. Thursday night, August 8. will feature the Angels against the winner of the Phillies-White Sox game tor the series championship. School Ground News Minor league Standings: Yankees 8 4 Dodgers 6 6 Cubs 6 6 Braves 4 8 The Yankees by winning their seventh straight game won the league by two games. They defeated the Cubs and Braves the past week. This week a tourney and an All-Star game between a team of 9-10 year olds and an eleven year old team is. being held. In the first round of the tourney the Cubs upset the Yankees 2-1 in probably the best pitched game of the year. John Zook of the Cubs and Greg Anderson of the Yankees pitched all the way. In the other game the Dodgers edged the Braves in another close game 5-4. Jim Menefee relieved for the Dodgers and protected a 5-4 lead by pitching shutout ball the last twd innings. Shuffle-board Tourney The special event for the past week was a shuffleboard tout ney. Twenty-nine boys and girls participated. Danny O'Connor defeated David Gensinger in the 11 and under division. Jim Fraser defeated Kevin Hosttetlcr in the 12-13 group Gil Hughes won the 14-15 year old group. In the girls’ tourney Nancy Beckwith and Terry Hamilton will play in the finals. S( OI TMASTER HONORED On July 31. 1963, the Boy Scouts of Walkerton, Troop 293, held a Hiirprise party for Jack Rizek who resigned as Scoutmaster after several years of service. Refreshments of potato chips, cupcakes and punch were served. Jack was presented with a tie clasp and cuff link set, appropriately engraved, from the boys in appreciation of all the time and effort he has put forth in their behalf. A man may have a reputation for being a good loser, but he seldom admits the best man won.
