1 pers about some of th • individual performances, but regardless, the inter-country competition is great for both nations. EACH COUNTRY WAS REP , resented by two men in each , event. In the case of th- Anni icans. it doesn't necessarily mean the best of each ev nt. but an elimination was run to choose these representatives If an individual had an off day when the , trials were being run. that was just his tough hick. Jim Beatty was on? of these as he has proven his ability in the mile, but just couldn't turn the trick the day of the elimination meet. Beatty. however, did compete in the event in an event that wasn I nm off in the trial meet. THE GREAT RI'SSTAN HIGH jumper. Valeric Bramell. set anoth< r world's recmd in his specialty. meet as he lost out in the trials on a day when he couldn't clear seven foot. THE AMERICANS WON both places m the pole vault despit • the tact that Brian SternIxTg was unable to compete, dm to liis untimely lux-ident a few weeks ago which has him hospi talized md [ossibly through as a < om|wtitor The height cleared wasn't up to snuff of the American me Us where often three, four or more are clearing Hi fool in the same meet. However, this was partially explained in the pits The Americans have been umg the n‘W "Port-A-Pit", manufactured pit of foam rubber that make.' landing in a b id position a rather safe thing. In the Russian meet, thia type of pit w । not utilized and the vaultspringing over the tremendoii heights with the fibn glass po • do nnt land well and the new form rubber pits make it much saf-‘i PROBABLY THE BIGGEST surprise for the American t-am was the failure of Hayes Junes in th-- high hurdles. This trem -n---dous hurdler just didn't have it in a race that was run twice because of a had start that left Jones at the starting line. An agreement to re-run the race didn't help Jones any as he just couldn't master his specialty that day. Ralph Boston did top the Rus.Mian's outstanding broadjumper as he sailed out pretty clone to the 27 foot mark again to wm that event. SHOTS OF THIS TRACK meet were available Tuesday 1 night on TV and to watch thia ' was thrilling regardess of where the athlete was from. If the Russian# have men that are superioi in their events, more power to them. Nothing should be taken away from these tremendous performers in a sport of individuals that has thrills that will not be surpassed m any other sport.
