SPRING IS A FAVORITE tin e of the year for several reason';. One is the beginning of th? baseball *?y<om Another is the on - loor aeUvity the average pers< * van taka part in, but a third is t.w coming of a couple of big spectacles. One of these is the annual Memorial Day 500 Mile Rm e at ^psedway. Indiana, more commonly known as being located at Indianapolis. THIS YEAR A M< iRE COMbme i effort will he made by the owners ol the expensive racing car< to dethrone the now convention il Offenhausers after they have run up a string of wins sm<e the war that hasn’t been seriously challenged This year there are some ears m the rate that look like they might imv what it lakes even though they aren’t proven over th- long gruelinn grind of .500 mi’es at sneeds cf most 150 miles an hour A COUPLE OF YEARS AG< : Cooper Climax was ent'red m the race. Last year several ears were present at the track that featured the real engine drive and the different p wer plants Again o* e made it into the race but didn’t finish high at all This year no less than el ven cars are entered in the field to try and qualify for the 31-; starting spots, a couple of these, the Lotus cars, are very highly respected as one was piloted by Dan Gurney around the 2’. mile oval in adverse conditions at speeds of over 150 miles per hour. The Lotus was just off the all tim? track record set by Pnmelli Jones. SEVERAL OF THE BIG CAR manufacturers are again going into this type of racing and are sinking thousands of dollars into cars to run on the Indianapolis trank This comretition between cvinpani.s putting cars into the R'”l AH HtE Fridav & Saturday May 3 & 1 Jumbo In Color Doris Dnj Stephen Buy J Jimmy Durante Martha Raye De m Jagger Sunday, May 5 I he Robe I In Color Richard Burton । Jean Simmons IV irt'ir M Huie .M c’nvl Rennie i V G- > s or\ Os I ox • an I Fat»h Ilie ' L I’ v 1 Kn hvu !

i ace may restore the race to ’ one of its original intentions, a 1 place to compete car against car Since the Offles have taken over and for many years every car was powered with an Offenhauser 1 four cylinder motor, there has • been a race only of car design and 1 driver s ability This change back may make it a three way battle again with motor being the m »st important. Os course, every cai must have a good driver to win but still the motor must be tl.ei ’ also ntAGincE RUNS ARE OPEN on May 1 of each year During the month young drivers wh * have never run at Indianapnh, are up for driver s tests. These include taking a present* d number of laps at a limited speed, slowly working them^ lves up tn a wide open throttle on the asphalt, low banked oval. The 500 mile track is not a modem track The lowbanked turns measure only a few degrees of incline, and the old track is not wide Three cars abreast are about all anyone wants to put on such a track Tradition and glory are the two things that keep building up themwda and interest THIS YEAR THE IXIMHN ued improvement of the track itself is more evident ns jus’ about all the old wxwden stand have 2 >nc 'Die main > fraught-a way v>w is n’i-us the wooden .stands tie n to the last -« .-ti »n before the north turn. < n the north <>f the tunnel under th* tra< k The new modern stands scat more ami seat them better This and more stands on th • inside of the track plus a new eeton on the northwest turn, and other improvements around th track, have increased the seatine capacity considerably to the point where estimates of the crowd have hit as higb as 300 ooh fra this year's race THIS IS A STRANGE THING with thousands of ]*>op!v flooding the infield and ’he .stards alway full, there is never an official atten<kance given of the crowd at the track Only the ownei - and the Interna!
