GUEST EDITORIAL I EDITOR'S MAIL Editor, Independent-News Walkerton, Ind. Dear Sir: At the recent PT A meeting in North Liberty, the question of activities for the youth in our community was briefly discussed. I should like to use your columns as a "Sounding Board" for some suggestions I have. Perhaps others will have other, and better, suggestions, and if enough interest is generated, a public meeting could be called to take action. I propose that one evening each week be designated as "SchoolCommunity Night," and school associated activities be scheduled for that evening, activities sucn as FEA, Y-Teens, Future Nm class parties, etc. This would i i an that the parents with several < al dren in school could make then plans more easily, and would not have "something going on at school every night." Os course, members of the athletic teams and class play cast would need to have more practice times. While Johnny and Susie are busy with their activities, the par- , ent who has had to furnish theii transportation has an hour or two wait. My second suggestion is to make rooms in the community- ( owned school available for use of adults. Such programs as classes in interior decoration, sewing, literature, could be held here if We sell preventive service when the frost is on the sompkin. enough interest was shown Those who attend the classes would pay a fee to cover costs of teachers and materials. Other activities for both adult and youth could be planned. Garden clubs, camera clubs, classes for square-dancing, a drama group, current events discussion group, speech craft club any of these plus many more could be organized and include members of a wide age-range. Interested adults not on the school teaching staff could be sponsors. I feel that a program such as this would do several things. Among them are; Give students a wider choice of extra-curricular activities, without requiring more of the parents for transportation, etc. 2. Proside an opportunity for hdulLs anil youth to work together in areas of common interest 3. Require less after school hours duty time for most teachers 1. Include school drop-outs and older youth in a community program. 5. Encourage all to continue to learn, even after formal education is completed. Thank you for allowing me to express my ideas I hope others will do so too.
